A three-vehicle crash on State Route 17 in the Town of Blooming Grove turned deadly Saturday evening, killing a 45-year-old Pennsylvania man and sending two other people to the hospital with injuries. The wreck unfolded just after 7 p.m. when a pickup truck failed to stop in time, triggering a chain-reaction collision that investigators say left one driver dead at a Middletown hospital.
According to Patch, State Police Monroe troopers responded to the scene at approximately 7:03 p.m. on October 3, after a 2003 Chevrolet pickup, a 2014 Nissan Pathfinder and a 2015 GMC Sierra were all traveling east on Route 17 in the same lane. The Nissan and the GMC had slowed and stopped because of traffic ahead, but the Chevrolet failed to stop in time and struck the rear of the Nissan, which was then pushed into the back of the GMC, according to the Newport Dispatch.
Sole Occupant of Pickup Pronounced Dead
The driver of the Chevrolet, identified as 45-year-old Sean M. Nelson of Millrift, Pennsylvania, was the pickup's sole occupant, per the Newport Dispatch. Nelson was taken to Garnet Health Medical Center in Middletown, where he was pronounced dead, Patch reported.
The driver and passenger of the Nissan Pathfinder were also transported to Garnet Health Medical Center, where they were treated for minor injuries, the station's report notes. New York State Police were assisted at the scene by the Blooming Grove Volunteer Ambulance Corps, per the same account.
Investigation Remains Open
As of Tuesday, the crash investigation remained ongoing, according to NYSP, as reported by Patch. Troopers from State Police Monroe had confirmed in a statement to the New York State Police that they responded to the three-vehicle personal injury crash at approximately 7:03 p.m. on October 3 in the Town of Blooming Grove.
