A person died after a fire tore through a first-floor apartment at the Tropicana Royale complex late Monday night, just east of Harry Reid International Airport, leaving seven residents displaced and the cause still unclear.

Crews responding to 1900 East Tropicana Avenue at 11:51 p.m. found smoke and flames coming from the first floor of the two-story multifamily building, according to the Las Vegas Review-Journal. Firefighters pulled a person from the burning apartment, but the individual was already deceased at the scene. No firefighters were injured during the response.

Crews managed to keep the blaze confined to the apartment where it started, preventing it from spreading through the rest of the complex. Even so, smoke forced seven people from their homes, and those displaced residents are now relying on property management, family members and the American Red Cross for help, per the same account.

Cause Still Under Investigation

The Clark County Fire Department has not yet determined what sparked the fire. As KTNV reported in a separate incident, the cause of the Tamarus Street fire remained under investigation.

A separate report from the Review-Journal concerned federal investigators joining the investigation into the 2021 Ely at Fort Apache construction-site fire in southwest Las Vegas.

A Familiar Pattern at Valley Apartment Complexes

Monday's fire adds to a string of apartment fires across the Las Vegas valley this year and in years past, several of which have left even larger numbers of residents without homes. A fire at the Sonterra Apartments in August displaced 16 residents after flames spread through a two-story building and affected four units, with no injuries reported among residents or firefighters, according to 8 News Now.

Back in March, a fire at Walker House Apartments was upgraded to a second-alarm blaze and extinguished within half an hour, but not before it damaged or destroyed 16 units and displaced 34 residents, including nine children. That outlet has also reported that Walker House has seen three fires in five years, including blazes in 2021 and 2023.

Other complexes have faced repeat trouble too. The Tides on Charleston has experienced several major fires since at least 2020, according to FireRescue1, which also noted that a June 2022 fire at the Lantana Apartments sent one person to the hospital for smoke inhalation and displaced more than 20 residents, while a February 2020 fire at the same complex displaced 19 people, including five children, and caused an estimated $500,000 in damage.

That same August fire at 5050 Tamarus Street started in a first-floor apartment before spreading to a second-floor unit and attic space, ultimately displacing 16 people and racking up more than $250,000 in estimated property loss before crews knocked it down around 7:20 a.m., per KTNV's reporting.

For now, investigators are still working to determine what caused the fire at Tropicana Royale, and no further details about the person who died have been released.
