Masked gunmen armed with handguns struck at least eight times across Philadelphia neighborhoods over a span of four days this month, forcing a 26-year-old victim to the ground and stripping victims of phones, wallets and bags before dawn. Police now say two persons of interest — one adult and one juvenile — are in custody, though as of Thursday no charges had officially been filed.
According to Philadelphia Police, two masked suspects carried out five robberies on Oct. 4 between 4 and 6 a.m. across Northern Liberties, Center City, Spring Garden and North Philadelphia-West. Both suspects were armed with handguns, and victims' bags and phones were taken, though police said no injuries were reported in those incidents. Investigators also said the suspects were using a stolen black Honda Accord that was later recovered on the 2200 block of West Sergeant Street.
The pattern didn't stop there. Police said additional gunpoint robberies hit the Fairmount and Temple University areas two days later, on Oct. 6, between 5:30 and 6:30 a.m. Officers described the suspects as Black males between 16 and 20 years old, with thin-to-medium builds, dressed in all black and wearing ski masks.
A Victim Thrown to the Ground Outside the Four Seasons
One of the more detailed accounts came from outside the Four Seasons Hotel in Center City, where, per NBC10 Philadelphia, suspects forced a 26-year-old victim to the ground and stole an iPhone, wallet, bag and clothing. NBC10's Aaron Baskerville spoke with a crime victim advocate about the robberies at that same location, part of the station's ongoing coverage of the case. The Philadelphia Inquirer reported that detectives believed the robbers largely targeted pedestrians who were holding or wearing bags in its account of the string of gunpoint robberies in Center City and North Philadelphia.
Exactly how many robberies belong to the pattern remains a point of disagreement among outlets. Fox 29 described at least two masked suspects believed to have carried out seven gunpoint robberies, while the same NBC10 report put the figure at eight robberies in neighborhoods across the city. Other police accounts, relayed by 6ABC, cited eight armed robberies since Oct. 2.
Two Persons of Interest, No Charges Yet
Philadelphia police confirmed to NBC10 that two persons of interest — an adult and a juvenile — had been taken into custody in connection with the robberies. As of that report, no charges had been officially filed against either one. 6ABC separately reported that investigators have not determined whether this pattern is connected to similar armed robberies reported back in August, even though the methods resembled one another.
Police held a press conference on the citywide string of armed robberies Wednesday, Oct. 7.
A Spike Against a Longer-Term Decline
The recent spree stands out against a broader backdrop. NBC10's data reporting found that 124 armed robberies have been reported this year in the same parts of Philadelphia where the recent crimes occurred — even as the station's investigators noted that these crimes have dropped by more than half over five years. That longer-term decline offers little comfort to residents in Northern Liberties, Spring Garden, Fairmount and the Temple University area who were suddenly confronted with masked men pointing guns at them before sunrise.
For now, the case remains open. Anyone with information has been directed to Philadelphia Police.
