Pho Binh's Katy restaurant is closing its doors Friday, ending a run on Nelson Way that the family-owned pho chain says lasted five years. The announcement covers only the suburban Katy outpost, part of a broader Houston-area chain with roots stretching back more than four decades.
Pho Binh announced the impending closure of its Katy location, which has operated at 25621 Nelson Way, Suite 130, according to Chron. In a social media statement, the restaurant said it was sad about the decision but trusted that God had a purpose for every season, and said it had decided to close this chapter and move forward with other adventures, per the same outlet. The Katy shop, which served beef, pork, chicken and shrimp pho along with sandwiches, boba and smoothies, according to communityimpact.com, was owned by Binh Nguyen, with each Pho Binh location in the region owned and operated by a different family member, the outlet previously reported.
Pho Binh also thanked customers for supporting the small business over the years, recommending it, celebrating milestones there, and returning again and again, the restaurant said in its statement reported by Chron. The Katy shop is said to have run for five years, per that same social media statement, though earlier reporting from communityimpact.com placed the location's opening in 2022, a span closer to four years.
A Houston Pho Institution Dating to 1983
The Pho Binh name carries weight in Houston's food scene. The Nguyen family opened the original restaurant at 10928 Beamer Road in South Houston in 1983, a spot credited as a pioneer in popularizing traditional Vietnamese soup in the city, according to the seed reporting from Chron. Over the decades, the family went on to open spinoff restaurants and additional locations across the region, including Pho Binh By Night.
That original restaurant and the Pho Binh By Night operation both closed in 2023. The original location shut down permanently after 40 years in business, following a fire in July 2023 that damaged the building and forced a temporary closure beforehand, according to houston.eater.com. At the time, the chain still had six locations operating in the Houston area, including outposts in the Heights, Katy and Bellaire, per the same report. A separate account from houstonchronicle.com also documents the original 1983 trailer's closure that year.
How Many Locations Remain
How Many Locations Remain With the Katy closure, Pho Binh now has four remaining restaurants, located in the Galleria area, Bellaire, the Heights and Sharpstown, according to Chron's reporting. The chain's reported location count has declined over time.
The Katy closure adds to a string of suburban Houston-area restaurant shutdowns reported recently. Fulshear's Fieldhouse Pub & Grill was also reported closing after a short run in operation, according to Chron. Duck N Bao's original Cypress location was likewise reported as shutting down at the end of its lease, the outlet noted in earlier coverage.
No word yet on whether Pho Binh plans to open a new location to replace the Katy restaurant, or whether the remaining four locations will see any changes following Friday's closure.
