A two-alarm fire tore through an abandoned home in Pittsburgh on Friday, sending crews scrambling to pull one man from a second-floor window while another person managed to escape out the back of the house. Neither person stuck around for medical evaluation once they were out, officials said.
Fire crews were called to the blaze in the 800 block of Concord Street in the city's Spring Garden neighborhood, according to WTAE. Officials rescued one man from a second-floor window as the fire spread through the vacant structure, while a second occupant escaped from the rear of the home on their own.
Despite the harrowing rescue, neither person remained at the scene to be checked out by medical personnel, per the same report. It's not clear how badly either person may have been affected by the smoke or flames before getting out.
Fire Knocked Down Within the Hour
Crews had the two-alarm fire under control in less than an hour, officials reported. Investigators are still working to determine how the fire started inside the abandoned property, according to the station's report.
Vacant and abandoned structures have posed recurring challenges for Pittsburgh fire crews in recent years, with blazes popping up in buildings across different neighborhoods. In December 2024, a man had to be rescued from a roof as flames spread to multiple homes in the city's Mount Washington neighborhood, according to WPXI.
Cause Still Under Investigation
For now, the exact cause of Friday's fire in Spring Garden remains unresolved as officials continue looking into how it began. No further details on the condition of either person who escaped the home have been released.
