Aaron Smith, 29, has been charged in connection with the 2023 shooting death of 23-year-old Rasul Aquil on Pittsburgh's North Side.
Smith was charged in connection with Aquil's killing.
Aquil, who was from Pittsburgh, was shot and killed on Feb. 5, 2023. He was found inside a vehicle on the 600 block of Chautauqua Street with a gunshot wound to his head. He died several hours later at a local hospital.
Surveillance Footage and Vehicle Tracking Led Investigators to Smith
Two people entered Aquil's car and ran off.
License-plate-reading cameras reportedly tracked the vehicle on Route 65 and across the McKees Rocks Bridge and allegedly captured the defendants' faces. Cellphone records were said to have tracked the defendants' phones along that same route, corroborating the vehicle sightings.
Second Person Named
Police said Smith was involved in Aquil's killing along with Demetrius Caligiuri.
Under Pennsylvania's rules governing pleas to a charge of murder generally, the degree of guilt is typically determined by a jury unless the Commonwealth's attorney elects to have the judge who accepted the plea make that determination instead, according to the Pennsylvania Code and Bulletin.
