A 21-year-old Pittsfield man has been sentenced to years behind bars after a jury found he supplied alcohol to three juvenile girls he met at a city park last summer, then attacked them, dragging one into the woods when she tried to fight him off. Chase Wood was convicted on charges including indecent assault and battery, assault and battery, and assault with intent to rape.
According to The Berkshire Edge, Wood met the three girls at a Pittsfield park during the summer of 2025, brought alcohol, and gave it to them. After they had been drinking, he gave the girls a ride on his e-bike and began trying to assault them, the outlet reported, citing the Berkshire County District Attorney's Office.
Two of the girls managed to fend him off, but the third could not because of where she was positioned on the bike, per the same account. Wood then took her to a secluded area of the park and, when she resisted, violently dragged her into the woods. All three girls ultimately escaped, according to Boston.com.
Guilty on Nine Counts
A jury found Wood guilty of three counts of indecent assault and battery, one count of indecent assault and battery on a child under 14, one count of assault and battery, one count of assault with intent to rape, and three counts of furnishing alcohol to a minor, Boston.com reported, attributing the findings to the Berkshire County District Attorney's Office, led by Timothy Shugrue. Wood's attorney, Colleen Carafotes, did not respond to a request for comment, according to the outlet.
Sentencing Falls Short of What Prosecutors Sought
On October 16, a judge sentenced Wood to two consecutive 2.5-year terms, followed by three years of probation, the Berkshire Edge's report states. Boston.com described the custodial portion of that sentence as five years in state prison, while CBS6 Albany reported that the judge ordered the time served in the House of Corrections rather than state prison — an unresolved discrepancy between the two accounts. Either way, the total falls well short of what prosecutors wanted: CBS6 Albany reported that the Commonwealth had requested a total sentence of seven to nine years in state prison.
Pittsfield Police served as the lead law enforcement agency in the case, per CBS6 Albany's reporting. Under Massachusetts General Laws Chapter 265, Section 13H, indecent assault and battery on a person age 14 or older carries a maximum penalty of five years in state prison or two and a half years in a jail or house of correction, according to the Massachusetts General Court. The charge involving the victim under 14 falls under a separate statute, Chapter 265, Section 13B, which the Massachusetts General Court states carries a maximum of 10 years in state prison or two and a half years in the house of correction.
