Conservation officers removed a pole from a Midland Park deer’s antlers Tuesday after tranquilizing the animal, Midland Park police said, according to News12.

Residents had raised concerns about the deer and drawn attention to it on social media before the rescue, News12 reported.

Bergen County animal control officials cautioned people against trying to free entangled wildlife themselves and advised them to contact animal control, News12 reported.

Deer entanglements were also reported last year in the Tenafly and Englewood area, where animals were seen with netting and plastic planter material, according to WOBM. The outlet said authorities advised residents to leave rescues to professionals and contact the New Jersey Fish and Wildlife hotline. When notified promptly, authorities can sedate an entangled deer, remove the material, reverse the sedation and release the animal, WOBM reported.

What deer harvest totals show

New Jersey Fish and Wildlife recorded 176 deer harvested in Bergen County during the 2023-24 season, according to its county harvest data. That is a harvest count, not a population estimate, so it does not establish the size of the local deer population.
