The alleged confrontation centered on a $500 debt, according to a police report described by cleveland.com. Cleveland Heights police are seeking a 49-year-old man on assault, robbery and aggravated robbery charges in connection with the Oct. 4 incident. The 63-year-old victim told police he recognized the man as the son of a friend and denied owing him money. Officers were called at 7:15 a.m. and found the victim bleeding near his left brow; he was taken to a hospital and received five stitches.
Before the reported confrontation, the woman at the home had asked the victim to leave, saying he had become verbally aggressive and yelled at her cats. She said this happened around 7 a.m., according to the police report.
The victim told police the man punched him five times in the face and kicked him twice in the side, then took his cellphone. Before noticing the SUV and encountering the suspect, the victim went outside and found his bicycle missing; it was unclear whether the man had taken it, cleveland.com reported. The victim described the money dispute as a misunderstanding involving a security deposit. He also told police the suspect was a drug dealer, while saying he had never bought drugs from him.
At 12:10 p.m. that day, the woman reported receiving 13 calls from a private number in the hours following the incident. She answered one, and the caller said he knew her and would come after her. She asked police to tell the victim not to contact her and sought a protection order, according to the report.
Ohio Revised Code section 2911.02 sets different felony levels for robbery: a violation involving a deadly weapon or infliction, attempted infliction or threat of physical harm is a second-degree felony, while a violation involving the use or threatened immediate use of force is a third-degree felony. The statute is available through the Ohio Revised Code.
Other reports and local records
Two other Cleveland Heights robbery reports from 2025 involved different circumstances. In one, a 28-year-old man was punched and had his burrito-bowl bag taken near the BP gas station at 2801 Mayfield Road on Aug. 2, cleveland.com reported. In another, a 16-year-old suspect allegedly robbed a man of a silver Cartier watch at gunpoint on Washington Boulevard on Aug. 8, the outlet reported.
The City of Cleveland Heights says police and accident reports dated Feb. 1, 2014, or later are available online through its report portal.
What local crime totals can show
The city’s guidance does not establish whether reported robberies rose or fell over the past five years. Cleveland Heights says its police department switched from UCR to OIBRS crime-statistics reporting in 2020, and the systems count offenses differently, limiting direct comparisons across that change, according to the City of Cleveland Heights. The city also cautions that published crime totals may change because of late reporting, offense reclassification or offenses later found to be unfounded, according to its crime statistics guidance.
