A new bagel shop is about to join Ballston's increasingly crowded breakfast scene. PopUp Bagels plans to open its first Virginia location at 4300 Wilson Blvd., with a grand opening event scheduled for 7 to 11 a.m. on Friday, Nov. 6.
The Connecticut-based chain, according to ARLnow, already has locations in Georgetown and Bethesda, and the Ballston shop marks its first foray across the Potomac into Virginia. The grand opening will feature hot bagels and what the company describes as special surprises, including a cafe salted caramel cider doughnut schmear made in partnership with Good Company Doughnuts exclusively for the Arlington location, per Patch. The company has not said how long that limited-time flavor will stick around.
A Rip-and-Dip Format Lands in a Bagel-Hungry Neighborhood
PopUp Bagels built its name on what ARLnow's reporting calls an “intentionally simple” menu: whole bagels sold only by the bag, accompanied by tubs of schmear meant for dipping rather than spreading. A starter order runs $15 for three bagels and a tub of cream cheese or butter, and the shop rotates its schmear flavors weekly. The storefront currently displays a sign reading “Bagels. Not Sandwiches.” while it awaits a final county inspection, the station reports.
The Ballston location sits within a mile of two other bagel shops that have opened in the neighborhood this year. Call Your Mother opened at 4000 Wilson Blvd. in July, and Bagel Uprising, which is based in Del Ray, opened its own Ballston storefront at 901 N. Glebe Road that same month after originally targeting a May opening. PopUp Bagels effectively lands between the two, filling a stretch of Ballston that lost its longtime Bruegger's Bagels location in 2023.
Company Says Expansion Across the Region Continues
A PopUp Bagels spokesperson told ARLnow the chain is excited to continue its D.C.-area activity with its latest Arlington location, part of a broader push the company has described as plans for up to 20 new locations across the region in coming years. The chain has steadily expanded throughout the Washington, D.C., area, and the Ballston opening is also expected to include localized touches paying homage to the neighborhood, according to the station's earlier reporting.
Ballston's bagel competition has already produced at least one breakout: Bagel Uprising was voted best new restaurant in Arlington in an ARLnow readers' choice poll. Whether PopUp Bagels can carve out similar loyalty remains to be seen, but with three bagel shops now clustered within a mile of each other, Ballston residents will have no shortage of options for their rip-and-dip fix starting Nov. 6. The company has not yet released regular operating hours for the new shop.
