A 31-year-old Portsmouth man is facing a long list of charges after police say he was behind a pair of armed robberies carried out just over a week apart at a local motel and a convenience store. Trevaughn Porter was taken into custody earlier this month and now sits in Norfolk City Jail without bond, accused of pointing a gun at a victim at an Econo Lodge and later storming into a Tinee Giant with a firearm in hand.
According to WAVY.com, police say Porter was arrested in connection with armed robberies at a Norfolk convenience store and motel. The first incident happened on September 29, when two individuals approached a victim at gunpoint at the Econo Lodge at 865 North Military Highway around 8:35 p.m. and took the man's personal belongings, including his car, police said.
A Second Robbery at a Neighborhood Store
Just over a week later, on October 8, officers received a report of a commercial robbery at the Tinee Giant at 123 West Ocean View Avenue. The outlet's report states that two people entered the store at approximately 7:30 a.m. with a firearm and stole items.
Detectives worked the case for weeks before Norfolk's Special Operations Team moved in. The article notes that officers took Porter into custody in the 100 block of Dupre Avenue on October 22, following an investigation that connected him to both scenes.
A Lengthy List of Charges
Porter now faces carjacking, robbery, armed burglary, credit card larceny, abduction, false identification to police, use of a firearm, burglary, forgery and obstruction of justice, per the same account. Police also said Porter had outstanding warrants from another jurisdiction at the time of his arrest, adding another layer to the case against him.
Virginia's General District Court system allows the public to search case information by locality, name, case number or hearing date through the Virginia Courts website, for those tracking how the charges move through the system.
Context From Past Norfolk Robbery Cases
Armed commercial robberies have surfaced in Norfolk courts before. In May 2023, a federal jury convicted a man and woman for their roles in a series of armed commercial robberies, according to the U.S. Department of Justice. A 2025 report from WRIC said five men tied to a gang received prison sentences for their roles in a series of armed robberies at convenience stores in Virginia Beach and Norfolk. These cases involve different defendants and circumstances than Porter's, and the available evidence does not establish a broader current trend tying them together.
For now, Porter remains held in Norfolk City Jail without bond as the case against him proceeds.
