More than 3.5 million lights are about to take over 40 acres of Roger Williams Park Zoo in Providence, as the Holiday Lights Spectacular returns for another winter run starting November 27 and continuing through January 3, 2027. The nightly walk-through transforms the zoo into a glowing wonderland of illuminated tunnels, light-up reindeer and a train ride past sparkling displays, giving families a reason to bundle up and wander the grounds after dark.
The event is presented by Rhode Island Energy and runs nightly from 5 to 9:30 p.m., according to rwpzoo.org. Visitors can explore the entire zoo grounds rather than just a roped-off section, with the full route taking about one to one-and-a-half hours to walk from start to finish. The display will go dark only on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day, per the zoo's own listing.
Michaela Johnson, who wrote about the event for 1420 WBSM, said she and her family loved their visit to the Holiday Lights Spectacular, noting that the Johnson family attended last year's event. Returning visitors will find many of the same seasonal touches that have become fixtures of the show, including hot chocolate, adult beverages and s'mores toasted by a fire pit along the path.
Storytimes, Santa and a Frozen Takeover
Younger visitors can catch Roger the Red Panda mascot hosting a playful holiday storytime three times a night, at 6, 7 and 8 p.m. On Mondays and Wednesdays from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m., families can also meet Elsa, Anna, Olaf and the Grinch at character meet-and-greets scattered through the lights.
Santa himself gets his own spotlight on December 4, when his arrival parade kicks off at 5:30 p.m., according to The Newport Buzz. The outlet's report corroborates the same 3.5-million-light count and 40-acre footprint described on the zoo's site, underscoring the scale of this year's display.
Tickets, Parking and Getting There
Tickets are required and must be reserved online in advance, the zoo's site notes, and every Tuesday night brings a $5 discount off each Holiday Lights ticket. Free parking is available on a first-come, first-served basis each night, so arriving early is the best bet for a close spot.
The Holiday Lights Spectacular takes place at 1000 Elmwood Avenue in Providence, according to visitrhodeisland.com. With the date window locked in and the familiar lineup of storytimes, character visits and Santa's parade confirmed, the event looks set to once again make Roger Williams Park Zoo one of the brightest stops in the city for the holiday season.
