Utah County is getting its first taste of a European-style Christmas market this winter, as downtown Provo prepares to host the Utah Valley Christkindlmarkt from Thursday, Dec. 10 through Saturday, Dec. 12. The three-day event will transform the grounds of the Historic Utah County Courthouse at 51 S. University Ave into a German-inspired holiday village, complete with evergreen-trimmed artisan chalets, handmade gifts, and old-world music.

The market is a joint production of the Provo Farmers Market and Explore Utah Valley, according to KSL News, which first reported the plans. Utah County Commissioner Skyler Beltran said the market will create a festive gathering place for families and visitors from across the region, a goal organizers hope will anchor the new tradition in downtown Provo for years to come.

Organizers describe the event, which runs daily from noon to 9 p.m. throughout its run, as the first Christmas market ever hosted by Utah County. According to the Provo Farmers Market, the 2026 Christkindlmarkt draws direct cultural inspiration from Provo's sister city of Meißen, Germany, incorporating traditional Saxon elements like open-air wooden stalls adorned with evergreen boughs, handcrafted ceramics and wood carvings, and classic German winter foods.

A Sister-City Bond Dating Back to 1876

That German connection isn't a marketing flourish — it's rooted in nearly a century and a half of civic history. Provo and Meißen established an official sister-city partnership in July 2001, a relationship that celebrates its 25th anniversary this year, according to The Thunderbolt. The bond traces back to Karl G. Maeser, who was born in Meißen in 1828 before becoming the founding principal of Brigham Young Academy in Provo in 1876.

Vendors will sell handmade items from Utah makers, which the event website describes as thoughtful gifts with an old-world spirit. Food offerings will lean heavily German, with warm pretzels, spiced sweets and hot cocoa planned alongside performances from choirs, orchestras and community musicians throughout the three days. Children's activities, including lanterns, stories and crafts, are also part of the lineup, and the county website describes the celebration as rooted in its mountain home, with evergreen-trimmed artisan chalets set to glow with hand-crafted treasures, warm pastries and music.

Following Salt Lake City's Lead

Provo's new market enters a landscape already shaped by Christkindlmarkt SLC, which has become increasingly popular over the last decade at This Is The Place Heritage Park in Salt Lake City. That market was established in 2012 by Allyson Chard and has grown to feature more than 90 vendors, according to Christkindlmarkt SLC. Provo's version, staged roughly 45 miles south, is carving out its own identity grounded in the city's historic ties to Germany rather than competing directly with the established Wasatch Front event.

The venue itself carries its own old-world character. The Neoclassical Historic Utah County Courthouse was constructed between 1920 and 1926 for approximately $580,000 and features pediment sculptures by Joseph Conradi depicting Utah County's agricultural and cultural heritage, per the Provo Utah Guide.

An Organizer With a Track Record of Winter Expansion

The Provo Farmers Market has hosted its regular summer market at Pioneer Park, and it previously expanded into cold-weather programming in November 2024 by launching its first indoor winter market at Provo Towne Centre, according to the Daily Herald. The Christkindlmarkt marks another step in that winter push, this time partnering directly with the county's tourism arm.

Vendor Applications Still Open

The inaugural market is listed on Marketspread, with vendor recruitment seeking regional artisans producing handcrafted ornaments, textiles, woodworking and authentic European holiday culinary items. Beltran said vendor applications for the Christkindlmarkt will remain open through Nov. 1, giving prospective sellers a few more weeks to apply before the lineup is finalized ahead of the December debut.
