A Pittsburgh Regional Transit bus slammed into the concrete base of a light pole near Ross Park Mall on Saturday morning, injuring all 14 people aboard, including the bus operator. The crash was reported just before 9:30 a.m. and involved a Route 12 McKnight bus at the mall complex in Ross Township.
Thirteen of the injured suffered only minor injuries such as bumps and bruises, while one person was believed to have suffered a broken nose, according to WTAE. Pittsburgh Regional Transit said all 14 people involved were transported to area hospitals, and the agency reported that none of the injuries were life-threatening. Ross Township police separately confirmed that the bus struck a concrete light pole base near the Ross Park Mall stop, according to WPXI.
Cause of Crash Still Under Investigation
The cause of the crash remains under investigation, per the same WTAE report. It's not yet clear whether mechanical failure, driver error, or another factor was involved.
Route 12 McKnight
Route 12 McKnight runs between Downtown Pittsburgh's Penn Station and the McCandless Park and Ride, serving 58 stops. PRT updates its schedules three times a year, according to Pittsburgh Regional Transit.
Saturday's crash follows another recent PRT safety incident across the region: a light rail crash in Mt. Lebanon earlier this month. PRT has not released additional details on the condition of the operator or the person believed to have a broken nose, and the agency has not said when the investigation into Saturday's crash is expected to conclude.
