A man and woman walked into a Pueblo Spirit Halloween store Tuesday night and tried to walk out with merchandise they hadn't paid for, according to police. When employees confronted them, the pair fled, and police say the man fired a handgun shot into the air before they sped off in a vehicle. The pursuit began later, when the vehicle failed to yield to officers, and stretched through Pueblo west along Highway 50 toward Cañon City and Fremont County.
Confrontation Inside the Dillon Drive Store
The incident began around 8:23 p.m. Tuesday in the 3200 block of Dillon Drive in Pueblo, according to krdo.com. Police said a man and woman entered the Spirit Halloween and attempted to steal merchandise before store employees confronted them. As the pair tried to leave, the station reports that the man pulled a handgun and fired a shot into the air, a detail also confirmed by a Yahoo News report citing Pueblo police.
The suspects then got into a vehicle and attempted to flee the area. According to the same krdo.com account, the vehicle failed to yield to officers, which initiated an authorized pursuit through the city of Pueblo and west along Highway 50 toward Cañon City.
Pursuit Crosses County Lines Into Fremont County
The chase drew in outside help as it stretched toward the mountains. The station's report notes that the Colorado State Patrol joined the pursuit and deployed a tactical device to slow the fleeing vehicle. The pursuit ultimately ended at the vehicle's registered address in Williamsburg, located in Fremont County, per the same account from krdo.com.
Officials identified the two suspects as 39-year-old Amber Baca and 21-year-old Isaac Baca, according to krdo.com. Reporting from the Colorado Springs Gazette similarly identifies the pair by name in connection with the robbery and chase.
Charges Filed Against Both Suspects
Amber Baca was taken into custody on an unrelated warrant for failing to appear in court tied to a disorderly conduct with fighting case, and she now faces new charges of aggravated robbery with intent to kill and complicity to commit a crime, krdo.com reports. Isaac Baca was arrested on charges of aggravated robbery with intent to kill, vehicular eluding, resisting or interfering with police, and harassment, according to the same report.
Both suspects are due in Pueblo County Court on Nov. 2, according to the Yahoo News report citing Pueblo police. No further detail on the precise status of those charges beyond the initial arrests has been independently verified.
