NYPD housing officers were patrolling in Queens when gunshots suddenly rang out nearby. The officers chased and apprehended the shooter, recovering a loaded gun.
The department’s account of the encounter came in a brief but dramatic post from NYPD News
, which uses the handle @NYPDnews. “Right place, right time. Housing cops were patrolling in Queens when shots rang out. Without hesitation, they chased and apprehended the shooter, and recovered a loaded gun,” the department wrote. The post, shared Tuesday morning, did not specify the exact location of the patrol, the time of the shooting, or the type of firearm recovered beyond describing it as loaded.
Separately, PIX11 reported that a person was taken into custody after officers encountered an individual with a gun in Far Rockaway, with shots fired just before noon near 25-33 Ocean Crest Boulevard. The station reported that CitizenApp video from that scene showed heavy, dark smoke along with an FDNY presence in the area, though additional details on the nature of that incident were not immediately made known. It remains unclear whether that Far Rockaway encounter is the same event described in the NYPD housing officers’ post.
A Precinct Already Watching Its Numbers Climb
Whatever the exact circumstances, the quick arrest lands amid a broader uptick in gun violence tracked in the area. Through October 18, the 103rd Precinct had logged ten shooting incidents in 2026, up from eight over the same stretch in 2025 — a 25 percent increase, according to a report from Hoodline. The same report noted that felony assaults in the precinct have also climbed, with 444 reported through July 19, up 5.5 percent from 421 the previous year.
That trend has played out in other recent Queens incidents. On July 14, police said a gunman shot a 29-year-old man in the buttocks on Sutphin Boulevard near 95th Avenue before fleeing eastbound, per the same Hoodline account. In a separate reported incident near Sutphin Boulevard, a suspect allegedly fired a weapon while fleeing a dispute; officers recovered two firearms and one shell casing, but no arrest or suspect description had been released in that case.
Citywide Gun Removal Efforts Continue
The arrest also comes as the NYPD touts broader efforts to get illegal firearms off the street. Since the beginning of 2026, the department has said it removed 4,100 guns from New York City streets, including 778 seized in Queens, according to a statement posted on the city’s official site. The NYPD also maintains citywide crime reporting that tracks complaints by patrol precinct, including arrests, summonses, and incident-level datasets tied to police enforcement, per the agency’s published crime statistics.
No further details have been released about the identity of the shooter apprehended by housing officers, the exact location of the patrol, or whether charges have been filed. Hoodline will update this story as more information becomes available.
