Rafael Nadal is coming back to a tennis court in Las Vegas, and for American fans it will be the first chance to see him play since he walked away from professional tennis in late 2024. The 22-time Grand Slam champion is set to headline The MGM Slam Presented by Capital One at T-Mobile Arena, marking his first U.S. playing appearance since retiring two years earlier.
Event organizers announced the exhibition for Feb. 28, 2027. A release from prnewswire.com states Nadal will headline the event on Sunday, Feb. 28, 2027, while WFTV also reports the date as Feb. 28, 2027. The match is slated for just before the ATP 1000 event in Indian Wells, California, according to WFTV's report.
Organizers have said that additional players, the official event format, and the broadcast partner will all be announced in the coming weeks, per the same prnewswire.com release. What's confirmed for now is the venue: T-Mobile Arena, a 20,000-seat building on the Las Vegas Strip between Park MGM and New York-New York, as described in a release from MGM Resorts.
A Return Two Years in the Making
Nadal, now 40, last competed professionally before retiring in late 2024. His final matches included a sold-out 2024 showdown against fellow Spaniard Carlos Alcaraz at T-Mobile Arena, streamed worldwide on Netflix, per prnewswire.com. That match, one of Nadal's last before retirement, ended with the 22-time Grand Slam champion outlasted by his countryman, according to the MGM Resorts release.
As reported by ClickOnDetroit, Nadal said he remembers the energy of a full arena in Las Vegas. He said he is returning at a different stage in life, without the pressure of the tour but with the same passion for tennis, and added that while his professional career is finished, the feeling of competing never really goes away.
From a Two-Player Showcase to an Eight-Man Field
The MGM Slam has grown considerably since its early days. The event expanded from two players to eight in 2026, according to the Sports Business Journal. That third annual edition featured an elite group of eight men's professional players competing for a $1 million prize, per the MGM Resorts release, using a win-or-go-home format in which first-to-10-point super-tiebreaker winners advanced to the semifinals and finals.
That 2026 field included announced first-round matchups such as Taylor Fritz against Tommy Paul, Reilly Opelka against Casper Ruud, Joao Fonseca against Gael Monfils, and Nick Kyrgios against Alexander Bublik, according to MGM Resorts. Brazil's teenage standout Fonseca ultimately defeated Opelka to win the event, per prnewswire.com. The Sports Business Journal also noted that the previous year's edition featured WTA stars Aryna Sabalenka and Naomi Osaka, who played doubles against Mardy Fish and Andre Agassi.
The 2026 edition also brought new commercial partners into the fold. The CW acquired broadcast rights to the MGM Slam, while Capital One came aboard as the event's presenting sponsor, the Sports Business Journal reported. Whether a similar lineup of sponsors and broadcasters returns for the 2027 edition featuring Nadal remains to be announced, organizers say.
