More than 400 people turned out at The Omni Rancho Las Palmas Resort in Rancho Mirage on Sept. 10, marking the largest crowd yet for the Desert Healthcare District & Foundation's annual health summit. The third edition of the Healthy Desert Healthy You Summit traded its earlier focus on environmental issues for a broader look at the social forces shaping whether Coachella Valley residents can get care, stay housed and stay well.

The daylong event, organized by the Desert Healthcare District & Foundation, centered on four themes: healthcare access, behavioral and mental health, healthcare workforce development, and housing, according to Uken Report. Healthcare professionals, nonprofit leaders and advocates led the discussions, while Coachella Valley media personalities moderated the panels, the outlet reported.

A Program Built Around Four Pillars

Attendees moved between panel discussions tied to the summit's four core topics, a keynote address and a call-to-action speech meant to spur follow-through once the day ended. Nearly 40 vendors set up for attendees to explore, alongside an art exhibition and free breakfast and lunch, per the same report. Opening remarks from the event were also made available afterward as a video, the outlet noted.

Donna Craig, who was interim CEO of the Desert Healthcare District & Foundation, said she wanted people to walk away with more than just information. Attendees should leave with something encouraging them to learn more about the social drivers of health shaping their community, Craig said. The district and foundation considered that goal met, framing the day as a success in giving attendees useful information and motivation to dig deeper into those issues, the report said.

Early Feedback Points to a Strong Reception

A post-event survey gathered responses from 58 attendees, capturing their experience of the summit and their overall opinions of the event, the outlet reported. The account identified Will Dean as the Desert Healthcare District's director of communications and marketing and Andrew Cabral as a photographer.

This year's growth builds on a trajectory organizers have tracked since the summit launched in 2024, when the goal was bringing community leaders, residents and other stakeholders together around environmental health challenges, according to the Desert Healthcare District. Those conversations, covering air quality, water quality and land-use issues, continued into the second annual summit in 2025, the district said. Organizers reported that attendance grew significantly between the first and second years, according to NBC Palm Springs, which covered the 2025 event's focus on Salton Sea health impacts, including dust pollution and ecological strain tied to the shrinking lake.

Why the Topics Shifted to Access and Workforce

A March 2023 market analysis commissioned by the district identified a shortage of 236 physicians across the Coachella Valley, according to the Coachella Valley Independent.

The workforce gap extends to nursing. The Coachella Valley needs roughly 350 new nurses every year, according to OneFuture Coachella Valley's Healthcare Workforce Leadership Roundtable, as reported by CV Independent. College of the Desert graduated a record 91 registered nurses this year, more than doubling its previous class sizes, the outlet noted, while the district's five-year strategic plan lists workforce development as the first of its four pillars.

The district has backed that goal with direct funding. Its board approved a two-year $374,900 grant in late 2024 to support enrollment of 35 nursing students through scholarships and holistic services, and separately approved a two-year $839,500 grant for OneFuture's Black and African American Healthcare Scholarship Initiative, according to the same CV Independent report.
