A Redlands man is facing attempted murder charges after police say he drove up to a victim's front yard, opened fire, and sped off — only to be tracked down and arrested within hours thanks to an automated license plate reader alert. Maxwell David Broderick, 34, was taken into custody Saturday evening after San Bernardino County Sheriff's deputies stopped his black Chevrolet Malibu at Baseline and Central, near the Highland Police Station.

According to the Redlands Police Department, the shooting happened just after 6 p.m. in the 900 block of Tribune Street. Police say the suspect arrived in a vehicle, approached the victim in his own front yard, shot him, and then drove off. The unnamed male victim was taken to a hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, and officers released a description of the suspect's vehicle within hours of the attack.

License Plate Alert Leads Deputies Straight to Suspect

The break came fast. Around 7 p.m., roughly an hour after the shooting, an Automated License Plate Reader hit flagged Broderick's Malibu, leading San Bernardino County Sheriff's deputies to intercept the car in Highland, directly in front of the police station there, according to IE Pulse

Sheriff's Air Support unit 40-King assisted ground units, the outlet reported. Redlands officers also arrived at the scene. A witness identified the driver as Broderick during the traffic stop, and he was arrested on suspicion of attempted murder.

Charges and Bail

Redlands police have not released further information about the investigation.

Broderick is being held on $1 million bail at West Valley Detention Center in Rancho Cucamonga. That figure lines up with the San Bernardino Superior Court's felony bail schedule, updated in June 2026, which sets a standard presumptive bail of $1 million for attempted murder charges under California Penal Code § 664/187, though magistrates retain authority to adjust bail at arraignment, according to the San Bernardino Superior Court.

If convicted of attempted second-degree murder, Broderick could face a base state prison term of 5, 7, or 9 years under Penal Code § 664/187. In general, firing a gun during an offense can bring an additional 20-year sentence under Penal Code § 12022.53, according to Wallin & Klarich.

Another Attempted-Murder Case

A 24-year-old Mentone man was arrested on $1 million bail for attempted murder after he allegedly chased and rammed his ex-girlfriend's car across the city.
