More than 300 guests packed River Oaks Country Club on September 30 as Rice Athletics supporters gathered for An Evening for Rice's Honour, the university's biennial tribute to the donors and volunteers who keep the Owls flying. The Rice Marching Owl Band and Rice cheerleaders gave the crowd a full pep-rally welcome before the formal program even began, setting a collegiate, high-energy tone for what is typically a more buttoned-up fundraising dinner circuit.
Cynthia and Bucky Allshouse chaired the celebration this year, with Walter and Linda McReynolds serving as honorary chairs, according to CultureMap Houston. The evening is held every other year specifically to benefit Rice Athletics, and this edition carried on a tradition that, per the same outlet, has generated nearly $7.5 million over the years for athletic scholarships, special projects and other Rice Athletics initiatives. A separate account from PaperCity has described the same biennial fundraiser's lifetime total as more than $7 million, so the precise cumulative figure varies depending on which report is cited.
Awards Honor Longtime Owl Backers
The night's centerpiece was the presentation of the Distinguished Owl Club Awards, which recognized Elle and Clarke Anderson, Brian Patterson, the late Karen Hess Rogers, Ben Westcott and Willis T. Wilson Jr. Rice President Reginald DesRoches closed out the program with remarks to the gathered supporters, capping an evening built around celebrating the people whose dedication supports the Owls.
Robert Ladd, chair of the Rice University Board of Trustees, was also on hand for the celebration. The event's roots stretch back decades.
A Tradition Four Decades in the Making
Walter McReynolds and Bucky Allshouse were the ones who created the event, which PaperCity reported was founded roughly 40 years before its coverage of this year's gala. The pairing of McReynolds as an honorary chair and Allshouse as an active chair this year echoes that founding partnership, with the two families still steering the event they built together.
Past editions of An Evening for Rice's Honour offer a sense of how the tradition has evolved. The 2022 gathering, the 19th in the series, was held at the same River Oaks Country Club ballroom and presented Distinguished Owl Club Awards to six honorees: Thomas O. Clanton, Julie Griswold, Jen Rigg Kneale, Mark Thomas Scully, Christopher Allen Shoppa and Robert L. Waltrip. That same year, the release noted Rice Athletics was preparing to enter the American Athletic Conference while in the midst of a $100 million capital campaign.
2024 Gala Set the Stage
The 2024 edition of the fundraiser, held October 15 that year, honored alumna Dana Burch, Göran Haag, Lynn Laverty Elsenhans, former basketball player and alumnus David Gibbs, and alumnus Thomas F.A. Hetherington, according to Rice University. That sold-out night continued a tradition that had raised more than $7 million to that point, and separate coverage put the single-night total for 2024 at more than $425,000 for Rice Athletics, while The Buzz Magazines reported $425,000.
This year's gathering kept the format largely intact: a reception energized by the Marching Owl Band and cheerleaders, a round of Distinguished Owl Club honors, and closing remarks from university leadership. For Rice Athletics boosters who have made the biennial trip to River Oaks Country Club since the 1980s, the formula hasn't needed much updating.
