A String of Stabbings Across Richmond This Fall
Saturday’s stabbing is the latest in a string of violent incidents reported across Richmond in recent months. On October 9, a man who had been stabbed was taken to a local hospital, where he later died, according to WRIC. In September, officers responding to 23rd and W Streets in the city’s East End found a man with a life-threatening stab wound and rushed him to a hospital, per the same outlet.
Back in July, police discovered a man with a stab wound at 2nd and Broad Street downtown and took him to a hospital for treatment of what was also described as a life-threatening injury, per that earlier WRIC report. Each of those cases, like Saturday’s, left key details — including the circumstances of the attacks and any suspect information — unresolved in the immediate aftermath.
What the Latest Crime Numbers Show
The stabbing comes as Richmond’s broader crime picture shows a mixed trend. Murders in the city are down 24% compared with the same period last year, and nonfatal shootings have decreased 15%, according to third-quarter data reported by WTVR CBS 6. The city also went 32 consecutive days this summer without a single homicide, per that report.
Still, overall violent crime in Richmond increased 1%, and aggravated domestic assault cases jumped 58% — an uptick Police Chief Rick Edwards attributed in part to a new state law that expanded the aggravated-assault category, according to WTVR. Shoplifting has also surpassed motor vehicle theft as the city’s most frequently reported crime, rising 21% year to date compared with last year, the station reported. Richmond’s police department also publishes weekly citywide crime statistics comparing violent and property crime figures with the same period the previous year, according to the City of Richmond.
No further updates on the victim’s condition or the investigation into Saturday’s stabbing have been released. Anyone with information is asked to contact Crime Stoppers at (804) 780-1000.
