Liberty Station will be the start and finish for the 13th Annual Jim Krause Memorial Charity Cycling Ride the Point on Nov. 7. The event raises money for pancreatic cancer research, according to the ride registration page.
Choose a route
Riders can choose a 5-mile Family Fun Ride, a 25-mile ride or a metric century. The registration page describes the shorter route along San Diego Bay bike paths as relatively flat; the longer rides use street routes and include climbs. Listed route areas include Point Loma, Ocean Beach, Mission Bay, La Jolla, Torrey Pines and Sorrento Valley, according to the registration page.
Volunteers will assist along the course, with SAG vehicles and five rest stops available to riders, according to the event listing.
Bicycle collision context
San Diego averaged about 339 bicyclist-involved collisions per year, regardless of injury severity, from 2019 through 2023, according to the City of San Diego’s Bicycle Master Plan collision analysis. These citywide figures do not specify conditions on Ride the Point’s routes. The analysis also examined 92 bicyclist-involved collisions resulting in severe injury or death in San Diego during that five-year period.
Fundraising and expo
The Point Loma Rotary Club organizes the ride in memory of Jim Krause, a former club president and cyclist who died in 2012 after pancreatic cancer treatment, according to PR Newswire. The club says the event began in 2013 and reports that more than $450,000 has gone to UC San Diego Moores Cancer Center for pancreatic cancer research on its Ride the Point page.
A free Healthy Lifestyle Expo is planned from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the PLNU Conference Center in Liberty Station. The expo page lists vendors, music, refreshments, bike demonstrations and activities for children. It estimates about 600 riders and 150 volunteers will attend, along with friends and family, and says more than 20 booths are planned.
