A former West Lyon High School softball coach from Rock Valley is headed to jail after admitting she repeatedly contacted the person she was legally barred from reaching. Alexis Ann Severson, 27, was sentenced Oct. 15 to 30 days in the Sioux County Jail, with credit for time already served, after pleading guilty to violating a no-contact order tied to her earlier sexual-exploitation case.
Severson's latest sentence stacks on top of the fallout from her original conviction, according to Dakota News Now, which reported the jail time came in addition to probation stemming from that earlier case. The station reported Severson was placed on probation for a period of two years following her original guilty plea, though The N'West Iowa REVIEW reported the probation term as five years — the two accounts conflict on the exact length. Associate Judge Dan Vakulska handed down the sentence, which also included a $105 fine plus court fees and costs.
Nine Phone Calls Over Two Weeks
The violation that landed Severson back in custody stemmed from an arrest on Aug. 23 in Rock Valley, when she was taken into custody on a charge of violating a no-contact order, per the same Dakota News Now account. The N'West Iowa REVIEW reported she also faced a first-offense sex-offender-registration charge. The Sioux County Sheriff's Office reported it had received information that Severson was violating her no-contact order, and a search warrant authorized examination of her cellphone. According to court documents, Severson admitted to placing calls to the protected individual nine times between Aug. 10 and Aug. 23.
That cellphone review also turned up multiple Zoom chat threads documenting daily texts and video calls with the protected individual dating back to June 2026, and investigators found the pair had been sharing and viewing each other's locations through the Life360 app. The first-offense sex-offender-registration charge was ultimately dismissed as part of her plea agreement, while a violation of a no-contact or protective order — classified under Iowa law as a simple misdemeanor, per the state's own Iowa Legislature code — remained the charge she ultimately admitted to.
How the Case Started
The case traces back to a Lyon County Sheriff's Office investigation that led to Severson's arrest in November 2024, according to KIWA Radio. Severson had engaged in sexual conduct with a then-underage student while coaching at West Lyon High School, located north of Inwood, from August 2024 through May 2025. She had been the head high school softball coach during both the 2024 and 2025 seasons, and school officials said she was no longer under contract once the 2025 season ended, KELOLAND reported.
KELOLAND reported that Severson pleaded guilty in May to a felony charge of sexual exploitation by a school employee along with an amended aggravated assault count of sexual exploitation by a school employee. She was sentenced Aug. 10 on that case, receiving a deferred judgment on the class D felony charge — a disposition that, under Iowa's sentencing framework, counts as a guilty admission paired with probation and can lead to expungement if probation is completed successfully, though the case may still surface on background checks. On the amended aggravated misdemeanor count, she received a suspended two-year prison sentence, and she was also ordered to serve a 10-year special sentence under supervision as if on parole once probation concludes. Severson was further ordered to register as a sex offender, which she did on Aug. 17, and her no-contact order was extended for five years.
Back in Custody, Then Released Again
Severson's rearrest in August led directly to her probation being revoked, Dakota News Now reported at the time. She was released from the Orange City jail on Aug. 24 after posting a $2,000 surety bond, only to turn herself in the next day on a Lyon County probation-violation warrant issued that same day. She was later released from the Lyon County Jail in Rock Rapids on Sept. 14 after posting 10 percent of a $7,000 bond.
Her case ultimately landed in Sioux County District Court in Orange City, where the plea agreement resolving the no-contact violation was filed Oct. 15. Severson's 30-day sentence will be served at the Sioux County Jail, and the station reported she is allowed work release. Iowa law treats a first violation of sex-offender-registration requirements as an aggravated misdemeanor, with a second or subsequent offense elevated to a class D felony, according to the Iowa Legislature's statute — though that particular registration charge against Severson was the one dismissed under her latest plea deal.
