Northbound I-45 at the I-610 Loop turned into a headache for Houston drivers Thursday after a rollover crash tied up numerous lanes of traffic. The Texas Department of Transportation's Houston District flagged the wreck in an alert posted around 1:28 p.m., noting that numerous lanes were affected at one of the city's busiest freeway junctions.
What TxDOT Says Happened
According to a statement posted by TxDOT's Houston District
, the agency responded to “a major crash with a rollover vehicle on IH-45 north fwy., northbound at IH-610 loop.” The district's alert, titled “Heads up on 45 north!”, said “numerous lanes have been affected” by the wreck.
TxDOT's alert also noted that a Harris County Sheriff's Office Motorist Assistance Program deputy was already working the scene. Per the Harris County Sheriff's Office, the Motorist Assistance Program is a free service designed to help stranded motorists on freeways throughout the Harris County area.
A History of Trouble at This Interchange
This isn't the first time this interchange has made headlines for grinding traffic to a halt. A separate crash reported by Fox 26 Houston described a wreck in the westbound lanes near I-610 North Loop and I-45 North shortly after 5 a.m. on a Friday, which closed the roadway for hours before it eventually reopened. In that incident, the station reported a flatbed truck appeared to have overturned and lost its load, scattering debris across the highway. It remains unclear whether that report refers to the same crash described in Thursday's TxDOT alert or a separate event at the interchange.
The I-610 West/I-45 North area logged 318 incidents over a recent 12-month span, including 214 classified as major and one fatal crash. A separate tally counted 1,793 crashes and four fatalities within a quarter-mile of the interchange since January 2020.
Other Traffic-Disrupting Crashes
Several other crashes have snarled traffic for varying stretches of time. One wreck involving a tanker truck and an 18-wheeler shut down the I-610 West/I-45 North interchange for more than eight hours after a fuel spill required hazmat response and roadway treatment before lanes could reopen, according to the same traffic data source. A separate northbound I-45 crash before Cypresswood, reported by ABC13, involved a pickup truck and an 18-wheeler and resulted in one death, with the northbound lanes completely shut down at one point. ABC13 also reported separately that a westbound I-610 North Loop exit ramp at I-45 North reopened nearly five hours after an 18-wheeler rollover crash and fuel spill.
As of Thursday afternoon, TxDOT had not provided an estimated clearance time for the latest rollover crash, nor confirmed whether there were any injuries. Drivers heading toward the I-45/I-610 interchange should expect delays and consider alternate routes until the scene clears.
