A longtime leader of a Rusk County emergency services board is behind bars after investigators say a tip from a child exploitation task force led to search warrants at his Henderson home. Dewey David Burks was arrested on charges tied to child pornography, and deputies seized multiple digital devices from his property early Thursday morning.
According to The Henderson News, Burks was arrested on charges of possession of child pornography with intent to promote, with the Rusk County Sheriff’s Office handling the case. KLTV, however, described the arrest differently, reporting that the 73-year-old was taken into custody on charges of possessing child pornography with intent to distribute, which the station characterized as a second-degree felony. The two outlets differ on the exact wording of the charge, and neither account has been reconciled publicly.
The case reportedly began after the Rusk County Sheriff’s Office received a tip from the Internet Crimes Against Children task force office, according to KLTV. Investigators developed probable cause from that lead and obtained an arrest warrant for Burks and a search warrant for his home and property, the station reported. The Henderson News corroborates that deputies executed those warrants at Burks’s Henderson residence early Thursday morning.
Devices Seized as Investigators Serve Warrants
On Thursday, sheriff’s office investigators, joined by members of patrol, served the warrants at the home, per the KLTV report. Multiple digital storage devices and electronics were seized during that search, the station said. Those items are expected to be part of the ongoing forensic review as the case moves forward.
Burks is being held at the Rusk County Jail awaiting an appearance before Precinct 5 Justice of the Peace Jana Enloe, The Henderson News reported. Further charges may follow as the investigation proceeds, according to the same KLTV account. The Henderson News separately confirmed that the broader investigation remains ongoing.
A Familiar Local Figure on the ESD Board
Burks holds a prominent role in local emergency services, serving as president of the Rusk County Emergency Services District No. 1 board of commissioners, where he represents Precinct 2.
As with any criminal case, Burks is presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court, The Henderson News noted in its report. No additional details about bond, a scheduled hearing date, or whether Burks has retained legal representation have been made public. The Henderson News separately said additional information would be reported as it becomes available.
