Sacramento County sheriff’s deputies are asking for the public’s help finding 11-year-old Aaron Wheeler, who was last seen riding a black skateboard near the 9800 block of Libra Avenue Saturday morning. Deputies say he was spotted at about 10 a.m. and has not been located since.
The Sacramento County Sheriff’s Office shared Wheeler’s description in a post on its official X account, Sacramento Sheriff
, writing that “Sheriff’s deputies are asking for the public’s help in locating 11-year-old Aaron Wheeler.” The post states that Wheeler “was last seen this morning at about 10:00 AM on the 9800 block of Libra Ave.”
Deputies describe Wheeler as approximately 4 feet 5 inches tall and about 100 pounds, with brown hair and hazel eyes. At the time he was last seen, he was wearing a dark shirt, purple shorts and red shoes, according to the same post.
Why Deputies Are Treating This as Urgent
The sheriff’s office has classified Wheeler as an at-risk missing child specifically because of his age, per the agency’s post. That designation is why deputies moved quickly to broadcast his description and last-known location to the public rather than waiting for additional information to surface.
A public request for help locating a missing child is distinct from a statewide AMBER Alert. California law sets specific criteria for an AMBER Alert, including confirmation that a child was abducted or taken, imminent danger of serious injury or death, and information that could help the public recover the child. The state’s AMBER Alert criteria explain why an at-risk designation by itself does not establish that an abduction occurred or that an alert will be issued.
California Department of Justice records show 2,850 reports of missing children in Sacramento County in 2024. The categories included 2,699 runaway reports, 39 parental or family abduction reports and 17 reports involving suspicious circumstances; the state’s figures count reports entered by law enforcement, not necessarily distinct children. The breakdown is part of the state’s 2024 county report.
The Sheriff’s Office has a dedicated Missing Persons Unit that investigates cases reported in unincorporated areas of Sacramento County and works with local, state and federal agencies, as well as nonprofit organizations, to locate missing people. The unit’s role provides a countywide investigative resource beyond the initial public appeal; the office lists the unit’s contact information and responsibilities on its Missing Persons Unit page.
Deputies are asking anyone who may have spotted a boy matching Wheeler’s description, or riding a black skateboard in the area near Libra Avenue, to come forward immediately. The sheriff’s office is directing tipsters to call 916-874-5115 with any sightings or information about Wheeler’s whereabouts.
What To Do If You Have Information
Anyone with details about Wheeler’s location is urged to contact the Sacramento County Sheriff’s Office right away rather than wait. As of Saturday evening, no further update on the search had been made public.
