A Sacramento Police Department gang enforcement operation ended with seven arrests and four weapons seized, including an AR-style rifle and a Draco assault weapon pulled from a car trunk. The coordinated stops unfolded on September 9 in the area of El Camino Avenue, Fairweather Drive, Truxel Road and Northview Drive, according to details released by police.
The operation began when officers with SPD's Special Investigations Unit, South Violent Crime Reduction team and East Violent Crime Reduction team were investigating what the department described as upcoming gang activity, leading to planned directed enforcement, according to a statement from the Sacramento Police Department
. That investigation set off a string of vehicle stops near El Camino Avenue, Fairweather Drive, Truxel Road and Northview Drive.
Trunk Search Turns Up Assault Weapons
South Violent Crime Reduction officers conducted an enforcement stop on a vehicle near El Camino Avenue and Fairweather Drive, per the department's account. A passenger in that vehicle was on searchable probation, and officers located an AR-style rifle and a Draco assault weapon inside the trunk. Lionel Dyer, 22, of Oakland; Destiny Wilkerson, 23, of Oakland; and Cavari Maytalley, 23, of Oakland, were arrested on weapons-related charges stemming from that stop.
Sinsaye Jones, 21, of Pittsburg, was also among the four occupants arrested on weapons-related charges in connection with that stop.
Armed Subject Spotted Leaving in a Second Vehicle
In a separate thread of the same operation, Special Investigations Unit detectives observed what they described as a related armed subject leave the area of El Camino Avenue and Truxel Road in a vehicle. South Violent Crime Reduction officers then conducted a high-risk stop of that vehicle, and officers located a semi-automatic firearm fitted with an extended magazine inside.
A third stop happened nearby on Northview Drive, where East Violent Crime Reduction detectives conducted an enforcement stop on another related vehicle. Officers located a loaded semi-automatic firearm in that vehicle. Korey Ramsom, 20; Joseph Maldonado, 21; and Boog Torres, 22, all of Sacramento, were arrested on related charges tied to the broader sweep, which in total netted four seized weapons across the three stops.
Charges Could Carry Years in Prison
Illegal possession of an assault weapon is a wobbler offense under California Penal Code Section 30605 and can be charged as a felony punishable by 16 months, two years or three years in county jail, according to the Shouse Law Group. It remains unclear whether any of the seven arrested individuals have had formal charges filed in Sacramento County Superior Court.
The September 9 operation involved SPD's Violent Crime Reduction teams and Special Investigations Unit.
Part of a Wider Regional Crackdown
The Sacramento stops echo recent enforcement patterns across Northern California. In February, detectives with the Sacramento County Sheriff's Gang Suppression Unit conducted a similar tactical stop that yielded an unserialized AR-style pistol and a Glock converted to full automatic capability.
Open questions remain about the specific gang affiliations tied to the September 9 arrests and whether any of the seized weapons were ghost guns or fitted with illegal conversion switches.
