A disturbance call near Eighth and J streets in downtown Sacramento turned into an early-morning arrest Monday after a man told officers someone tried to attack him with a knife. Police say the victim was not hurt, and the suspect was taken into custody at the scene.
According to Public Safety News, Sacramento police booked a 40-year-old Sacramento man after the reported knife-assault attempt near the intersection. Officers responded just before 3 a.m. Monday to the 800 block of J Street following a report of a disturbance involving a weapon, the outlet reported, citing police.
Police identified the suspect as Maurice Daniel, 40, of Sacramento, per the same account. An adult male victim told officers that a suspect attempted to assault him with a knife, and the victim reported no injuries, police said.
Suspect Detained, Charges Not Yet Specified
The report states that Daniel was safely detained and booked on related charges, though the Sacramento Police Department did not specify what those charges were in its statement. No additional details about the circumstances leading up to the confrontation, the relationship between the two men, or the outcome of the booking were included in the account.
The Sacramento Police Department maintains a Dispatch and Crime Data Portal that tracks calls for service and crime records across the city, and the department also publishes a daily activity log summarizing events and calls for service. The city's broader 2025 Crime Report data is updated daily as new records come in, though that dataset does not speak to Monday's incident specifically.
Same Intersection Has Seen Violence Before
The Eighth and J streets corridor has been the site of violent incidents in the past. The Sacramento Bee reported that a woman was wounded in a downtown Sacramento shooting near the same intersection on October 13, 2022, after she was struck by gunfire. There is no indication that the 2022 shooting and Monday's reported knife incident are connected in any way beyond sharing a location.
