Sacramento Police announced that detectives secured homicide arrest warrants for two men, Javon Crump, 22, of Antelope, and Dion Murphy, 36, of Elk Grove, who were subsequently taken into custody. The announcement caps what police described as an extensive investigation into a shooting that left one man dead.
In an update posted to X, the Sacramento Police Department
wrote that detectives moved forward “following an extensive investigation and the relentless pursuit of the suspects in this homicide case.” The department said both men were booked into the Sacramento County Main Jail following their arrests on homicide warrants.
The case traces back to an early-morning shooting in Sacramento. Officers with the Sacramento Police Department responded around 2:30 a.m. on Sept. 7, 2024, to reports of a shooting in the 4000 block of 4th Avenue, according to kcra.com. Arriving officers found two men suffering from gunshot wounds, and both were transported to a nearby hospital.
One Victim Died, the Other Survived
One of the two men died in the hospital, while the other was expected to survive, the station's report said. Homicide detectives took over the investigation at the scene, and at the time, police said no suspect information was available. The Sacramento County Coroner's Office has said it will release the identity of the person who died once next of kin have been notified, though that identification was not included in the information reviewed for this story.
Sacramento's Violent September
The arrests come against the backdrop of a particularly bloody stretch for the region. A separate report from sacbee.com found that five people were killed and three others wounded across five separate Sacramento-area shootings over one reported weekend, with police saying two of those incidents were connected to sideshows unfolding across the county.
