Sacramento woke to clear skies and temperatures around 63 degrees Sunday, but the easy morning will give way to a long, punishing stretch of heat. The capital city is headed for a 96-degree afternoon, with even hotter conditions arriving early next week.

The National Weather Service has a Heat Advisory in effect across Sacramento and surrounding inland areas through 10 p.m. Wednesday. Forecasters expect widespread Moderate HeatRisk, with pockets of Major HeatRisk, as dry air and limited overnight cooling keep conditions hazardous for some residents.

Hottest Stretch Arrives Monday Through Wednesday

Monday is expected to reach 100 degrees, followed by a forecast high near 102 Tuesday and 101 Wednesday. Overnight lows will only fall into the mid-60s, while light winds generally stay below 5 mph.

The extended advisory is a substantive update from Hoodline’s earlier forecast, which had the alert ending Monday. The hottest part of the current outlook is now expected from Monday through Wednesday, when some locations could approach or exceed daily records.

Dry Air Makes Afternoon Plans Tougher

Rain is not expected, and afternoon humidity could drop into the teens and 20s. Outdoor exercise, yardwork and errands will be more manageable in the morning or evening, with shade and air conditioning becoming increasingly valuable as the day heats up.

Residents are urged to drink plenty of fluids, wear lightweight clothing, limit strenuous activity during the hottest hours and check on older adults, neighbors, children and pets. Anyone without reliable cooling should make plans before the hottest days arrive.

Cooler Weather Finally Moves In This Weekend

Thursday should still be hot near 99 degrees, but Friday drops to about 92. A much sharper cooldown is expected Saturday, when Sacramento could top out near 81 degrees under sunny skies.
