A man was rescued early Saturday morning after his 30-foot sailboat took on water and sank in Woods Hole Passage off Falmouth, Massachusetts. He was the only person aboard, and a Coast Guard crew pulled him from the water once the vessel went down. He wore a life jacket and had no reported injuries.
The Coast Guard crew recovered him from the water after the vessel sank, Boston 25 News and Capecod.com reported. He was wearing a life jacket and showed no reported injuries.
Rescuers brought the man back to USCG Station Woods Hole, where emergency medical services were waiting to evaluate him, the station's report noted. Capecod.com reported that he was brought to the Coast Guard station specifically to be checked for possible hypothermia, a precaution given the cold water and early-morning timing of the incident.
Multiple Agencies Responded To The Scene
Falmouth Fire-Rescue also responded to the scene, according to Capecod.com, which placed the sinking in the waters off Penzance Point in Woods Hole. The outlet described the event as a developing story as details continued to emerge Saturday.
Boston 25 News also covered the rescue, reporting the same core details: a 30-foot sailboat taking on water off Falmouth, a lone sailor pulled from the water, and no reported injuries. The precise cause of the boat taking on water has not been disclosed, nor has the vessel's fate after sinking.
Not The First Close Call Near Falmouth Waters
A previous Coast Guard rescue near Falmouth occurred in October 2025. The Coast Guard rescued three people — a mother, father and son — off Naushon Island after their 30-foot pleasure craft, the Third Wave, caught fire after departing Falmouth's Eel Pond, according to Capecod.com. That trio spent about 30 hours stranded on the island before a Coast Guard MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter crew from Air Station Cape Cod airlifted them to Cape Cod Hospital for further care, the outlet reported.
The rescued sailor was brought to the Woods Hole station, where EMS was waiting. No further details about the man or the sailboat have been released.
