A 44-year-old man was hospitalized early Saturday after police say he accidentally shot himself in the legs while grabbing a weapon during a fight that broke out at a party he was hosting in San Antonio. The shooting happened around 2 a.m. in the 200 block of Brady Boulevard near Frio City Road.
According to San Antonio police, an altercation broke out between multiple people at the gathering before the man went to grab a weapon, as reported by WOAI. The gun went off during the altercation, and the gunshot struck the man in the lower extremities, police said.
Man Taken to Hospital After Self-Inflicted Wound
Police say the man was transported to a local hospital for treatment following the shooting. The station's report does not detail his condition or whether he has since been released, and those details remain unknown.
It also has not been established whether anyone was arrested or cited in connection with the altercation that preceded the shooting, nor has the firearm's ownership been identified in available reporting.
Part of a String of Self-Inflicted Shootings in San Antonio
The Brady Boulevard incident is the latest in a string of self-inflicted shootings reported around San Antonio this year. In August, a San Antonio Police Department academy cadet was hospitalized after accidentally shooting himself in the foot, per the same account from the local station. Earlier reporting from the outlet also described a 27-year-old woman who suffered a reportedly accidental gunshot wound to her upper extremities on the 200 block of Scheh, with that investigation continuing. In a separate case from 2021, a San Antonio man died after accidentally shooting himself while handling a gun at a West Side home, the outlet reported at the time.
State and federal agencies track this kind of incident as part of broader injury surveillance. Texas injury-prevention materials from the Texas Department of State Health Services classify violent deaths as including suicides, homicides, accidental firearm deaths, and undetermined violent deaths. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention separately maintains current statistics and research on firearm injuries and deaths nationwide.
Locally, the San Antonio Police Department reports its crime data to the National Incident-Based Reporting System as required by law, a system that captures details on shootings like the one on Brady Boulevard. No further information on an investigation or possible charges tied to Saturday's incident has been released.
