A 35-year-old man was stabbed under the arm during a late-night altercation on San Antonio's West Side, and the man accused of attacking him remains unidentified. San Antonio police responded to a report of a cutting on the 1300 block of Cupples Road at 11:37 p.m. Saturday, and officers arrived to find a victim who said he had fought with another man who then pulled out a knife and stabbed him.
According to News 4 San Antonio, police said the victim told them he planned to take himself to the hospital for treatment rather than wait for paramedics. Police described the suspect as a man between 20 and 25 years old who ran from the scene before officers could arrive. No arrests have been made, and police said the investigation remains ongoing.
Just this past January, three people were injured in a road rage shooting along U.S. Highway 90 near Cupples Road, a case Hoodline reported remains unresolved. Fox San Antonio and KENS 5 reported that the suspect vehicle rammed the victims' car before occupants opened fire.
A Pattern of Knife Attacks Across the West Side
Saturday's stabbing adds to a string of knife-related assaults that have hit San Antonio's West Side in recent months. A 39-year-old man was stabbed on West Commerce Street in September, and an altercation at an apartment complex near Loop 410 led to another cutting in October, when one of the two people involved suffered a cut and left before officers arrived; investigators did not know where that person went or the extent of the injury. Hoodline covered an unresolved knife attack just two weeks ago in which altercation details also remained unclear to investigators.
Not every recent West Side stabbing has ended with the victim surviving. A fatal stabbing outside a San Fernando Street apartment complex in September left a 33-year-old man dead, though in that case two suspects were arrested. The frequency of these incidents underscores an ongoing challenge for patrol officers working the West Side, even as citywide numbers tell a different story.
Citywide Crime Numbers Show a Different Trend
Despite the recent string of West Side stabbings, San Antonio's overall violent crime statistics have moved sharply downward. Citywide violent street crime fell 21.1% in 2025 compared to the year before, with average monthly aggravated-assault counts dropping 19.8%, according to an annual evaluation presented to the San Antonio City Council in March, as reported by the San Antonio Report. The figures were compiled by University of Texas at San Antonio criminologists tracking non-family violent offenses.
In targeted hot-spot areas, violent incidents dropped by 63.2%. That strategy relies on placing marked patrol cars with activated overhead lights in key locations for short intervals.
The broader strategy traces back to San Antonio's Violent Crime Reduction Plan, launched in 2023 and built with UT San Antonio criminologists around a three-phase framework: short-term hot-spot policing, mid-term place-based interventions, and long-term focused deterrence. According to UT San Antonio, the plan draws on criminological routine activities theory to increase visible guardianship in high-activity areas.
Investigation Continues
For now, San Antonio police say the investigation into Saturday night's stabbing is ongoing, and no arrests have been announced.
