Recovery and financial support
KSAT reported that Cadena supports four children and has not been cleared to return to work after suffering a punctured lung, fractured rib and an arm laceration that damaged tendons. His medical bills are accumulating, and he may still need surgery. The station said Cadena is focused on being alive rather than angry at the person who attacked him.
Melissa Cervantez organized a GoFundMe titled “Support Jorge After a Traumatic Attack” to help with Cadena’s medical expenses and living costs. The fundraiser lists October 4, 2026, as its organizer date and says he faces weeks without income while recovering, according to the article.
The Texas Crime Victims’ Compensation Program may provide eligible crime victims up to $50,000 for expenses including medical bills and lost wages. An arrest or conviction is not required, and the program is administered by the Texas Office of the Attorney General under Chapter 56B of the Code of Criminal Procedure, according to the Schiffer Law Firm.
Texas victim-compensation assistance
The Texas Office of the Attorney General reported more than $82 million in Crime Victims’ Compensation payments to victims and service providers during fiscal year 2025. That statewide figure does not indicate whether Cadena will qualify for assistance, according to the office’s annual report. For eligible claims involving crimes after July 14, 2016, the program covers up to $700 per week in lost wages, subject to its requirements, the Texas Office of the Attorney General says.
Police investigation remains unresolved
KSAT reported that the San Antonio Police Department is investigating and no suspect has been arrested in connection with the stabbing. Cadena told the station he thought Schertz police may recently have arrested his attacker in a separate violent-crime case. That possibility remains unconfirmed; KSAT said it was awaiting clarification from police.
What KSAT reported about the attack
The stabbing happened around 8 p.m. on October 3, after Cadena finished his shift at Dee Willie’s and stopped at a nearby convenience store, according to KSAT. Cadena told the station that a man came from behind a wall and stabbed him. He had noticed an unfamiliar man near the restaurant earlier that day and suspected it was the same person, but said there had been no confrontation.
KSAT reported that Cadena returned to the restaurant and asked his boss to call 911. While waiting for paramedics, employees applied a tourniquet to his arm and pressure to his chest.
