San Antonio police say a woman used a makeshift hook to snag the keys to a U-Haul pickup truck right off the business floor, then drove off in the vehicle. Kendra Bridges is accused in connection with the theft, which police say unfolded at a San Antonio U-Haul location.
According to KSAT, officers eventually located the U-Haul pickup parked near a Motel 6 on Interstate 10 West.
That patience paid off, police say, when Bridges left the motel, got into the Silverado and drove away. Officers followed her to a home, where she was taken into custody, the outlet reports.
Surveillance Footage Allegedly Shows the Hook in Action
Investigators say surveillance video from inside the U-Haul business showed Bridges using the hook to reach inside and grab the vehicle's keys, a detail cited in the same KSAT report. Police confiscated the hook as evidence following her arrest.
When questioned, Bridges told investigators that someone had given her a code to take the vehicle, and that she needed a way to get home to Corpus Christi, per the station's account. Bridges is associated with Corpus Christi, according to the report.
Felony Charge Tied to Vehicle's Value
Bridges was booked on a felony charge of theft of a vehicle valued between $30,000 and $150,000, the outlet reports. Under the Texas Constitution and Statutes, theft of property in that value range is classified as a felony of the third degree.
The stolen U-Haul pickup was ultimately recovered and turned over to U-Haul, closing the loop on the theft. Police have not released additional details about the exact U-Haul location or the precise timing of the alleged theft.
