A 46-year-old Sapulpa man is facing a slate of anticipated charges after barricading himself inside a home near South Walnut Street last week. Steven Kinman was taken into custody on Oct. 22 following a tense multi-agency SWAT response, and a newly detailed probable-cause affidavit lays out allegations of stabbing, strangulation and threats.

SWAT Called After Man Refuses to Come Out

Kinman barricaded himself inside a home near the 300 block of South Walnut Street and refused officers' commands, according to newson6.com. A multi-agency SWAT team was called in to assist Sapulpa police in making contact with him, and officers ultimately deployed tear gas before Kinman came outside and was taken into custody. Investigators identified Kinman as the suspect in an alleged assault and described him as the ex-boyfriend of the woman at the center of the case.

According to the station's report, the investigation began after the woman arrived at a hospital with bruises across her body and several cuts. The standoff and the hospital visit are connected to the same underlying domestic violence investigation, though the two outlets frame the sequence of events somewhat differently in their reporting.

Affidavit Details Alleged Overnight Assault

A probable-cause affidavit sworn by Sapulpa Police Officer Kyle Masters outlined five anticipated charges against Kinman: kidnapping, domestic assault and battery by strangulation, assault and battery with a deadly weapon, interfering with a 911 call, and possession of a firearm after a former felony conviction, according to the Sapulpa Times. The affidavit states the woman told investigators that Kinman asked her to come to his home the night before so the two could work things out.

Instead, the woman said she woke up to Kinman stabbing her hand with a kitchen knife, per the affidavit detailed by the Sapulpa Times. She reported that he repeatedly threatened to kill her, at one point telling her she would die that night and would not make it to the morning. The affidavit also states that Kinman took her phone to prevent her from calling 911.

Woman Fled Before Dawn, Affidavit Says

The woman told investigators she escaped the house about 4 a.m. after waiting for Kinman to fall asleep, according to the affidavit. Officer Masters was sent to a Sapulpa emergency room about 9:18 a.m., where hospital staff reported that a woman had been stabbed, strangled and beaten. At the hospital, Masters observed two puncture wounds on the woman's left hand consistent with stab wounds, as well as bruising on her face, arms, neck and throat consistent with being struck and choked.

The Sapulpa Times reports that Kinman is the subject of multiple protective orders and has a pending domestic case, details that emerged alongside the affidavit's account of the standoff. It remains unclear whether the five anticipated charges outlined in the affidavit have been formally filed.

A Statewide Context for Domestic Violence Cases

Statewide, homicide numbers have shown some improvement. The Oklahoma Domestic Violence Fatality Review Board reported 87 domestic violence homicide victims in 2024, which oklahoma.gov described as the state's lowest total since 2017.
