Sarasota BMX, the longest continuously operating BMX track in the country, closes out the 2026 UCI BMX Racing World Cup season this weekend with two days of racing that will decide four world champions and hand out points toward the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics. Rounds 9 and 10 run Saturday and Sunday at the Youth Athletic Complex track, marking the only United States stop on the international circuit this year.
According to SportsTravel, Sarasota's rounds will wrap up a season described as a 10-round international series, and riders racing there this weekend will also have a chance to gain qualification points toward the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games. A Visit Sarasota County news release, meanwhile, describes the UCI World Cup as comprising eight rounds held across four venues each year — a discrepancy in how the season's structure has been characterized across sources. Either way, the stakes in Sarasota are the same: as the Sarasota Record reports, Rounds 9 and 10 will determine the overall champions in four categories — Men Elite, Women Elite, Men Under 23 and Women Under 23 — with races also awarding points toward 2028 Olympic qualification.
Ahead of the weekend, Sarasota County said 216 BMX riders from 26 countries were training at the Youth Athletic Complex, according to MySuncoast. Visit Sarasota projected the event would ultimately welcome more than 400 participants and 1,500 spectators over the two days, per the organization's event listing.
A Track With More Than 50 Years of History
The track hosting this weekend's finale sits at 1590 N. Tuttle Ave. and has operated continuously for more than 52 years, a run that Sarasota BMX says makes it the longest-running BMX track in the United States. The facility was upgraded in 2016 with a 5-meter ramp, an 8-meter ramp, and dual-purpose amateur and supercross tracks, according to Sarasota County Parks. FOX 13 Tampa Bay described the event as featuring more than 200 BMX racers from across the world competing for a chance to go to the Olympics — a framing that lines up with the county's count of 216 riders from 26 nations training locally ahead of race day.
A Tight Title Race Heading Into the Finale
The Women Elite championship arrives in Sarasota as one of the tightest races of the season. After eight rounds, the Sarasota Record reported that Laura Smulders led Great Britain's Bethany Shriever by just 11 points, 2,861 to 2,850, with Canada's Molly Simpson sitting third at 2,536 points and Switzerland's Zoé Claessens close behind at 2,534. The margin leaves plenty on the line for the Sarasota rounds to settle.
That standings snapshot came out of the circuit's most recent stop in China, where the season had already rolled through several countries. At the October 10-11 races in Chongli, Australia's Joshua Jolly and Switzerland's Cédric Butti won the Men Elite events, while Shriever and Smulders split the Women Elite victories, per the Sarasota Record's recap. Fatbmx.com noted that the 2026 season started in France, continued through the Netherlands, and added four rounds in China before heading to the United States for its conclusion — a calendar expansion the UCI announced with the addition of four Chinese rounds.
Sarasota Already Locked In for 2027
This weekend's races won't be a one-off for the Suncoast. Visit Sarasota County said Sarasota County will host two consecutive UCI BMX Racing World Cup events in 2026 and 2027, with next year's final rounds already scheduled for October 2-3, 2027, back at Sarasota BMX. The county's sports tourism arm also said the event will be broadcast internationally via the UCI's YouTube channel, giving the local track global visibility well beyond the riders and fans on hand at the Youth Athletic Complex. For a community whose BMX track has quietly run for more than five decades, hosting back-to-back World Cup weekends represents a notable moment on the international stage.
