Campers headed to Seneca Lake next season may find a lot more room to park. Seneca Lake Resorts has begun preparing an expansion at Sampson State Park that is expected to add 68 recreational vehicle sites, with ground preparation already underway in the park's 800-loop camping area.

The company announced the move this week, and according to Fingerlakes1.com, site work in the 800-loop started on Saturday. The outlet reports Seneca Lake Resorts will keep campers and locals posted with construction updates as the project moves through the winter months.

Sampson State Park already draws a steady stream of RV travelers each season. The park currently has 243 electric campsites spread across five camping loops, per New York State Parks ReserveAmerica. That same listing notes the marina at the park is operated by Seneca Lake Resorts, tying the campground and waterfront together under one operator.

A Public-Private Partnership Years in the Making

Seneca Lake Resorts runs through a public-private partnership between New York State and SamSen LLC, the company's about page states. SamSen LLC is a project of Sessler Development and a division of Sessler Companies, and the resort was formerly known as SamSen Parks before adopting its current name, according to the same source.

Sessler formed SamSen in 2018 with the goal of developing what the company called a world-class vacation destination on Seneca Lake, per the resort's own account. The seasonal RV sites the resort already operates typically run from mid-April through late October, the company notes on its site, while this year's full camping season at Sampson State Park runs from May 15 through October 11, with the 2027 season set for May 21 through October 10, according to the state park listing.

No Timeline Yet on Pricing or Reservations

Plenty remains unknown about the new 68 sites. The resort has not announced a completion date for the expansion, has not specified when reservations for the additional sites will become available, and has not released details about utility connections, seasonal availability or pricing, the report notes. Those specifics are expected to surface as construction continues through the colder months, with the company having pledged ongoing updates.

This isn't the first time the park has seen a major overhaul tied to the SamSen partnership. A previous SamSen-related project at Sampson State Park, described by Sessler Wrecking, created new roadways and sites for modernized cabins along with 60-foot full-hookup seasonal RV sites. That same earlier effort dewatered the park's 100-slip marina and removed more than 12,000 cubic yards of sediment while dredging the basin.

The marina work also added two new concrete boat-launch ramps and replaced the marina's infrastructure entirely, per Sessler Wrecking, along with a fuel dock, a pump-out station and a new convenience store stocked with boating and camping supplies. It's the kind of groundwork that has steadily reshaped the park's shoreline over the past several years, setting the stage for the current RV expansion.

For now, park visitors should note one other change tied to ongoing improvements: Sampson State Park will no longer rent out its picnic shelters, according to the ReserveAmerica listing. Whether that's connected to the new RV build-out or simply part of broader park upkeep isn't specified, but it's one more sign that Sampson State Park's camping and recreation footprint is still very much in flux heading into next season.
