A fire that tore through the bar at Sharpsburg VFW Post 709 left the Main Street hangout spot for local veterans in charred ruins, but the post is rebuilding. The blaze struck in 2025, destroying what the post had long served as for veterans in the small Allegheny County borough.
According to CBS News Pittsburgh, Sharpsburg VFW Post 709 was hit by the fire in 2025, and the damage amounted to more than just a wrecked bar — it took away a gathering place that local veterans had relied on for years. The post is rebuilding after the fire.
The scene inside the bar in the fire's immediate aftermath was stark. An early morning fire on a Sunday gutted the bar of the VFW along Main Street in Sharpsburg, according to WPXI, which reported that the bar’s countertops were charred and melted right into the sink. The station also noted that an apartment above the VFW was unoccupied at the time, with a resident who happened to be out of town when the flames broke out.
Investigators Found Nothing Suspicious
The Allegheny County Fire Marshal investigated the blaze, and WPXI's report at the time indicated nothing suspicious had turned up in that inquiry. An insurance adjuster inspected the property the following Monday, though the station noted it still wasn't clear when the VFW would be able to reopen. A separate WPXI item had earlier reported that the Sharpsburg VFW would remain closed until further notice after the fire broke out inside.
Volunteers Take Over the Rebuild
Since then, the post has been rebuilding, per the CBS News Pittsburgh report. The hands-on rebuilding effort reflects how central the post remains to the Sharpsburg community even while its doors have been disrupted.
The VFW has kept its fundraising presence alive in the meantime. A December listing from TribLIVE described a benefit breakfast and flea market hosted by Sharpsburg VFW Post 709, and CBS Pittsburgh separately featured a bingo fundraiser tied to the post. Neither item detailed a reopening timeline, but both point to a post still finding ways to bring the community together while its Main Street home gets put back together.
