A new Chipotle near the 9:30 Club in Shaw is reportedly opening its doors Wednesday morning at 10:45 a.m., bringing a long-anticipated fast-casual spot to the 900 block of W Street NW. But the restaurant's road to opening day has been anything but straightforward, with at least one earlier report pointing to a different debut date entirely.
The Wednesday opening was reported by PoPville, which said it spotted the restaurant's opening note during a walkabout the previous weekend. The outlet's headline put it plainly: “DC's Newest Chipotle Opens Tomorrow (Wed. 10/21) near the 9:30 Club!” That timing, however, conflicts with what the same outlet reported back in June, when a Chipotle representative said the location would officially open on August 31, 2026 — nearly two months earlier than Wednesday's reported date. The dossier does not resolve which date is accurate or whether the October opening represents a delay from the original plan.
The Shaw shop is part of a much larger buildout: Chipotle’s 2025 annual filing counted 4,042 company-owned restaurants at year’s end, after 334 openings that year. The company projected about 350 to 370 openings in 2026, including international partner-operated locations. Chipotle began with a single Denver restaurant in 1993, making the Shaw location one addition to a chain that has grown across the country and abroad.
A Shaw Storefront Years in the Making
The Chipotle sits next to Unido in Shaw, according to the same June report from popville.com, which quoted a company representative confirming the pairing: “This is the one coming next to Unido in Shaw.” At that point in the summer, the restaurant's status was still described as “in progress,” per the same account, suggesting construction or buildout work was ongoing even as a specific opening date had already been set.
Earlier reporting had placed the project on the radar of Shaw residents months before that. Back in May, PoPville reported seeing “Coming Soon” signage up at the site, describing the location as being on the “900 block of W Street, NW just off Florida Ave.” That address lines up with Chipotle's own location listing for a restaurant at 901 W St NW in Washington, DC.
The storefront’s other tenant has a longer history on W Street: Café Unido announced its Shaw location would open Nov. 1, 2022, describing it as the Panamanian coffee company’s second Northwest Washington location. The café’s brand centers on Panamanian coffee, including specialty beans, while its Shaw opening brought the company’s coffee and food program to a block now set to add a national fast-casual chain.
What's Still Unclear
Neither the May nor June reporting nailed down a precise street number beyond the general 900 block, and nothing in the available reporting confirms operating hours, menu specifics, staffing, or any opening-day promotions for the new location. It's also not clear from the record whether Wednesday's reported opening represents the restaurant finally debuting after a delay from the original August target, or whether one of the two reported dates was simply inaccurate at the time. Shaw diners curious about grabbing a burrito bowl near the 9:30 Club this week may want to see for themselves whether the doors are open.
