Austin police are investigating a shooting at The Domain that left one person hospitalized Sunday afternoon. The gunfire happened around 3:20 p.m. in the 3300 block of Esperanza Crossing, and the victim was taken to a hospital with a gunshot wound and was listed in serious but stable condition.
The details come from the Austin Police Department's watch command, as reported by KVUE. Beyond the location, timing and the victim's condition, no other information about the shooting has been released, including any details on a suspect, a motive or whether additional people were involved.
A Shopping and Residential Hub With a Mixed Safety Record
The Domain is one of Austin's busiest mixed-use retail and residential districts, drawing shoppers, residents and office workers to its stretch of stores, apartments and restaurants in the north part of the city. Crime data compiled by KrimeLabb and reported by CBS Austin found that violent crime there is not common, though reported assaults have been trending upward, climbing from just under 50 in 2016 to 60 the following year. Vehicle burglaries, the outlet noted, remained the area's most prevalent offense, with 130 reported cases in 2017.
That same analysis counted 11 reported violent crimes in 2017 within a 900-meter radius of a Domain parking lot, according to the CBS Austin report. The figures offer a snapshot of how uncommon violent incidents have historically been at the development, even as property crimes like break-ins remained frequent.
Echoes of a Deadly 2024 Shooting Nearby
Sunday's shooting occurred not far from where a fatal shooting unfolded in December 2024. Carlos Sotelo, 17, died after he was shot during what police described as an attempted robbery at the Griffis at The Domain apartments, according to KXAN. Police said multiple suspects approached Sotelo and others at gunpoint in a parking garage at 3210 Esperanza Crossing and opened fire into their vehicle as the driver tried to drive away.
Sotelo was pronounced dead at 10:28 a.m. on Dec. 14, 2024, and Austin police classified the case as the city's 68th homicide of that year, the station reported. Investigators have not said whether Sunday's shooting on the same stretch of Esperanza Crossing bears any connection to that earlier case, and no such link has been established.
As of Sunday evening, Austin police had released no further information on the shooting, including any arrests or a description of a suspect. Hoodline will update this story as more details become available.
