Anderson police responded early Wednesday morning after a shooting broke out near campus. One person was hospitalized.
Officers with the Anderson Police Department confirmed they were responding to a shooting near Anderson University early Wednesday morning, according to FOX Carolina. An officer on scene confirmed that one person had been hospitalized, though details remained limited in the immediate aftermath. FOX Carolina crews were stationed in the 200 block of Cedar Ridge as the response unfolded.
In a separate report about an April 17, 2025, shooting, WYFF4 said officers responded at 2:20 p.m. in the 800 block of East Whitner Street. WYFF4 reported that officers found a man with a gunshot wound to the calf, with injuries described as non-life-threatening.
Campus Locked Down After 2025 Shooting
In its account of the April 17, 2025, shooting, WYFF4 reported that Anderson University was placed on lockdown, with students asked to shelter in place because an armed suspect was believed to be in the area, though not on university grounds. Police K9 units were tracking the suspect as the search continued, according to the report. Police said that shooting happened across the street from Renaissance Academy and that the school itself was not involved.
WYFF4 reported that officers were interviewing a 16-year-old male suspect in connection with the April 17, 2025, shooting. WSPA's later-updated account of the same incident reported that officers detained a suspect for questioning after a resident provided a tip. WSPA also reported that a 16-year-old shot another teen near a school in Anderson.
Earlier Anderson Shootings Occurred in 2025
Anderson has seen gun violence before. In a separate incident in August 2025, officers arrived at a scene on Arlington Avenue around 5:30 p.m. on a Saturday, and one victim was airlifted to a hospital, FOX Carolina reported at the time. In that earlier case, one suspect was taken into custody for questioning, according to the police department. That incident is unrelated to Wednesday's shooting near Anderson University, but it underscores that this is not the first time the city has grappled with a shooting investigation playing out in real time.
Much about Wednesday's shooting remains unconfirmed. No motive, weapon description or charges have been released.
