Norfolk police are investigating after shots were fired into a house on Argonne Avenue early Monday morning, according to the department. Few details have been released so far about what led up to the gunfire or what happened at the scene.
Officers with the Norfolk Police Department are investigating the shooting, as reported by WAVY.com. The station said its 10 On Your Side team had a crew on scene and would provide updates as more information becomes available. As of the station's report, no additional details about the incident had been released.
A City Already Grappling With Rising Violence
The Argonne Avenue shooting lands amid a year of troubling numbers for Norfolk. The city recorded 28 homicide incidents and 29 victims through Aug. 25, a 65% jump from the 17 incidents logged at the same point in 2025, Police Chief Mark Talbot said, according to the Daily Press. Twenty-three of those 28 homicides involved shootings, the outlet reported.
Not every violent-crime category moved in the same direction, though. The same report noted that nonfatal shootings actually dipped slightly in the first half of the year, with 16 reported compared to 17 over the same stretch in 2025, and that overall violent crime fell 3%, from 532 reported crimes to 517. The homicide spike, in other words, stands out against an otherwise mixed local crime picture.
Norfolk's Homicide Jump Outpaces Comparison Cities
That divergence looks even starker in a broader context. Norfolk's homicide count rose 64% from the first half of 2025 to the first half of 2026 — the largest increase among 30 cities tracked by the Council on Criminal Justice, according to a separate report cited by WTKR. Across that same sample of cities, the average reported homicide rate was actually 18% lower in the first half of 2026 than during the same period a year earlier, the station noted, making Norfolk's trajectory an outlier rather than part of a national pattern. The same report found motor vehicle thefts in Norfolk climbed 26% over the same comparison period.
Residents looking for more localized information can check the city's own Crime Mapping tool, which lets users search by address, landmark, or ZIP code for certain crimes reported over the previous 90 days, per the City of Norfolk. It remains unclear what, if anything, the tool will show for the Argonne Avenue address once the investigation is further along.
No arrests, injuries, or further case details tied to the Argonne Avenue shooting had been confirmed as of the latest update. WAVY.com said it would share additional information as it becomes available, and Hoodline will continue to follow the story.
