A Silver Alert for 76-year-old Vicente De Jesus Sanchez was canceled after he was found safe. He vanished from the area around Ben Taub Hospital in the Texas Medical Center at approximately midnight Friday morning. He was last seen wearing a white t-shirt and blue plaid pajama pants, carrying a blue backpack, in the 1500 block of Ben Taub Loop, according to authorities.
Houston police had asked anyone with information about Sanchez's whereabouts to contact the Houston Police Department, as reported by Click2Houston. Tipsters could reach investigators at 832-394-1840. Texas Government Code § 411.382 provides for a statewide Silver Alert program, under Texas law.
Before any alert goes out, state guidelines require local police to collect written documentation from a medical professional confirming the senior's impaired mental state, according to the Texas Department of Public Safety. That medical verification requirement exists specifically so the alerts stay reserved for vulnerable residents with documented cognitive risks rather than routine missing-persons cases.
A Search Centered on One of the World's Busiest Medical Campuses
Sanchez was last seen near a facility that rarely sits quiet. Ben Taub Hospital, located at 1504 Taub Loop, is a 402-licensed-bed public hospital run by Harris Health System that logs more than 80,000 emergency department visits every year, per the hospital system's own statistics. It is part of Harris Health System's public hospital network.
The hospital opened in May 1963, named for Houston philanthropist Ben Taub, who donated land and civic leadership to help establish the city's public hospital system, according to Harris Health System. It now sits inside the Texas Medical Center, a 1,345-acre complex with 54 million square feet of developed space that draws more than 160,000 visitors and 10 million patient encounters a year, per the Texas Medical Center, widely considered the largest medical complex in the world. That scale and constant foot traffic complicate any search for a missing person on or near the grounds.
Why Wandering Poses Urgent Risks for Seniors
National data underscores why disappearances like this one demand a fast response. Six in 10 people living with dementia will wander away from safety at least once during their illness, according to the Alzheimer's Association, and such episodes can occur suddenly even in familiar surroundings. Elder care guidance from LTC News similarly advises calling 911 within 15 minutes when a person with dementia goes missing.
Capacity Pressures at Ben Taub
Ben Taub operates above its maximum inpatient capacity.
Hoodline has reported on other recent Houston Silver Alerts that ended with seniors found safe, including a missing Houston woman found safe. As of October 3, 2026, Sanchez had been located safe and the Silver Alert had been canceled.
