Two people were left critically injured early Saturday morning after a violent crash near Randolph Road and Bluhill Road in Silver Spring sent a vehicle into a utility pole, snapped it in half, and sent live electrical wires crashing down onto an overturned car with someone trapped inside.
The response began around 5 a.m., according to FOX 5 DC, which reported that Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Service crews were dispatched to what became a serious, multi-layered emergency. A vehicle struck and snapped the utility pole, and the collision brought down live electrical wires directly onto the overturned vehicle, complicating the rescue.
The vehicle flipped over in the crash and trapped a person underneath it, the station reported. Emergency medical personnel evaluated two trauma patients at the scene, and both were found to have life-threatening injuries. Authorities have not released the names or ages of the injured, nor have they provided any update on their conditions since the crash.
Power Lines Shut Down Both Sides of Randolph Road
With the pole down and wires draped across the roadway, utility crews worked to address the downed electrical lines while the wreckage itself remained tangled in the debris. The fallen pole and power lines blocked both sides of Randolph Road, and drivers were advised to avoid the intersection while crews worked to clear the scene and restore safety to the corridor.
The cause of the crash remains unclear, and it is also unclear whether other vehicles were involved in the collision, per the station's report.
A Stretch of Road Already Under Safety Review
This is not the first serious crash to hit Randolph Road in recent memory. In June 2025, a five-vehicle crash on eastbound Randolph Road just before Connecticut Avenue sent two adults with traumatic injuries, along with several others including one child, to area hospitals, according to Montgomery Community Media.
Montgomery County officials have already identified the corridor as a priority for upgrades. The Randolph Road Safety Improvement Project targets a 1.3-mile stretch of the roadway with the goal of improving conditions for pedestrians, cyclists and drivers alike, according to the Montgomery County Department of Transportation. The agency has said it will move forward with short-term improvements scheduled for construction within the next two years, including installation of a dynamic speed sign and a pedestrian hybrid beacon specifically at Bluhill Road, the intersection where this latest crash occurred.
County's Vision Zero Push Targets Major Arterials
The crash adds to a broader pattern tracked by county planners. Montgomery County defines a serious injury as including severe lacerations, a broken leg or arm, significant burns, suspected internal injuries, unconsciousness or paralysis, according to Montgomery Planning, which maintains an interactive crash map tracking countywide trends by neighborhood using data that goes back to 2015 and is updated weekly.
That data shows most serious injuries and fatalities across the county cluster along major arterials such as Georgia Avenue, Old Georgetown Road and Veirs Mill Road, Montgomery Planning notes. The county's Vision Zero initiative aims to eliminate transportation fatalities and serious injuries entirely by 2030, part of a broader effort to curb the kind of catastrophic outcomes seen in Saturday's crash.
No further details have been released about what led up to the collision or how the two critically injured victims are faring. Hoodline will update this story as more information becomes available.
