A sinkhole opened near South 22nd Avenue and East Bridge Street in Brighton on Saturday afternoon, prompting crews to shut off water service to residents within a five- to six-block radius while repairs get underway. The City of Brighton is asking people to steer clear of the area as work continues at the intersection.
Crews are working to repair the sinkhole at the intersection, according to Denver7, which reported the collapse. The outlet, citing Brighton police, said the water shutoff will affect people living within five to six blocks of the site, though it's unclear how long service will remain off for those households. City officials said updates will be shared as they become available, but as of Saturday no timeline for restoring water or reopening the intersection had been released.
A Corridor Already Under Construction
The ground failure struck in a stretch of Brighton that has seen heavy underground utility work in recent years. A $25,506,771 project to widen East Bridge Street between 22nd Avenue and 42nd Avenue had a June 1, 2023, start date. The project record lists water-line utility work and storm sewer pipe work, according to project records. Whether that construction activity played any role in Saturday's collapse has not been addressed by the city.
The intersection carries added significance beyond the current roadwork. A year-long transportation planning study involving the Denver Regional Council of Governments and the city identified South 22nd Avenue as the eastern boundary connecting historic downtown Brighton to the commercial corridor along Bridge Street, per the Denver Regional Council of Governments. That makes any extended closure at 22nd and Bridge a potential headache for traffic moving between the old downtown core and the city's eastern commercial strip.
Part of a Wider Pattern in Adams County
Saturday's collapse isn't an isolated event for the region. In August 2026, a broken municipal water line caused a major road collapse on Belle Creek Boulevard in neighboring Commerce City, also in Adams County, forcing emergency closures and utility repairs, as reported by CBS News. Emergency repairs are underway along US Highway 85 in Brighton between New Beale Street and Promenade Parkway after a failing underground storm culvert pipe was discovered, according to footage shared by Brian Sherrod.
Weather and Soil Conditions in the Mix
A sinkhole in Carbondale was reported amid drought, heavy rain and flooding, according to 98.5 KYGO.
For now, the city's message to residents is simple: stay away from South 22nd Avenue and East Bridge Street while crews assess and repair the damage. Brighton officials have pledged to post updates as the situation develops, though no estimate has yet been given for when water service or full road access will return to the affected blocks.
