A truck driver parked along Island Avenue in Southwest Philadelphia woke up before dawn Tuesday to the sound of someone moving around inside his cargo truck — and by the time he climbed out to investigate, six men were already hauling boxes of frozen snow crab out the back. He tried to stop them. They chased him off instead.

Police say the theft happened at about 4:57 a.m. in the 3400 block of Island Avenue, according to NBC10 Philadelphia, though 6ABC reported the incident occurred around 4 a.m. in the 3600 block of the same street. Either way, the driver had been asleep in the cargo truck when the noise woke him, and he stepped outside to find six men pulling boxes of snow crab from the rear of the vehicle. When he tried to confront them, the men chased him away from his own truck, per NBC10's account.

By the time the driver got back to the scene, the thieves were gone — along with two full pallets of frozen snow crab, amounting to 50 boxes weighing roughly 30 pounds apiece, for a total haul of about 3,000 pounds. The six suspects fled in multiple vehicles, including a gray Ford F-150 and a gray Dodge Caravan, NBC10 reported. Police described one suspect as about 5 feet 8 inches tall in all-black clothing, and another as about 5 feet 6 inches tall, weighing roughly 180 pounds, also dressed in all black.

Investigation Still Open, No Suspects Named

Philadelphia police said an investigation into the theft remains ongoing, with no suspects publicly identified and no arrests announced in connection with this case. The overnight heist adds to a growing list of seafood thefts that have hit the city's trucking routes in recent years.

South Philadelphia has seen its own string of crab-related cargo thefts. Back in 2024, a crew of six thieves made off with three pallets of crabmeat worth $42,000 from a tractor-trailer, according to The Philadelphia Inquirer. That same report detailed a April theft in which thieves grabbed roughly $30,000 worth of snow crab after assaulting a driver in a Walmart parking lot, and an October theft in which about $73,000 worth of crab clusters was taken from a truck on Germantown Avenue. Philadelphia has also seen other cargo thefts.

A Pattern That Stretches Beyond Philadelphia

Snow crab, in particular, has become a recurring target for organized theft crews up and down the East Coast. In April 2023, a cargo theft crew stole approximately 34,500 pounds of frozen snow crab legs from a trailer in the Philadelphia area while the driver slept inside the tractor, according to FreightWaves. In July 2025, a Worcester, Massachusetts, warehouse lost 33,750 pounds of frozen snow crab valued at about $325,000, as reported by The New York Times.

The broader numbers help explain why trucks full of frozen seafood keep ending up as targets. Cargo-theft losses nationally surged 60 percent to nearly $725 million in 2025, according to CargoNet, which also tracked confirmed theft incidents climbing 18 percent year over year. Food and beverage thefts alone jumped 47 percent to 708 incidents, and CargoNet specifically flagged meat and seafood as heavily targeted products in the Northeast. In Pennsylvania, cargo theft rose nearly 60 percent from 2022 to 2023 and stayed elevated the following year, per data cited by Philadelphia Magazine, which reported that more than 180 cargo theft cases turned up in the city's 8th District alone by the end of 2024.

In a separate New Jersey case, a man and a juvenile were in custody after an attempt to steal 29,000 pounds of frozen seafood worth $273,000, according to NJ.com. Whether this week's Southwest Philadelphia theft leads to similar charges remains to be seen, as the investigation into the missing 3,000 pounds of snow crab continues.
