A truck driver parked overnight in Northeast Philadelphia woke up to his trailer shaking early Thursday and found that thieves had cut the padlock and stolen roughly $10,000 in beef.

Driver Describes Waking to a Trailer Already Being Emptied

Police responded at about 4:12 a.m. to the 5200 block of Devereaux Street in the Wissinoming section, according to NBC10 Philadelphia. The driver had been sleeping inside the cab when he noticed movement by the trailer. The thieves had cut the padlock on the rear trailer and loaded product into their own vehicles. After the thieves left, the driver examined the truck and found five pallets of beef gone, a loss the station pegged at about $10,000.

The driver managed to shoot cellphone video of the suspects as they fled the scene in a dark gray Nissan sedan and a pair of dark-colored SUVs, per the same report. He turned that footage over to police, and an investigation into the theft was underway. As of Thursday, no description of the suspects was available and no arrests had been made, according to The Philadelphia Inquirer.

As ABC11 News also reported on the theft, the driver filmed the suspects as they fled.

Not an Isolated Incident

This is at least the third reported cargo theft targeting meat or seafood in the Philadelphia area within weeks. Just two days earlier, thieves made off with 3,000 pounds of frozen snow crab from the back of a trailer while its driver slept in Southwest Philadelphia, according to the Inquirer's separate account of that crab heist. NBC10 Philadelphia reported that investigators believe the Northeast beef theft and the Southwest crab theft may be connected, though it remains unclear how firmly that link has been established.

Separately, 6abc reported on a Northeast Philadelphia theft involving about five pallets of meat valued at roughly $40,000, which that station placed near the 2800 block of Southampton Road — different figures and a different location than the Devereaux Street incident described above. The Inquirer also noted that an earlier, early-October heist in Northeast Philadelphia involved $40,000 worth of frozen ground beef, and that a September robbery in South Philadelphia saw thieves make off with half a pallet of Black Angus beef ribs. CBS News Philadelphia reported that four masked men took about half a pallet of Black Angus beef ribs from a trailer outside Ritter Foods in South Philadelphia, and that pallets of crab meat worth an estimated $42,000 were stolen from a South Philadelphia truck in September 2024.

A Pattern Police Say Predates the Pandemic

Philadelphia police told 6abc that groups in the city may have been carrying out cargo thefts since the COVID period, suggesting this isn't a new phenomenon so much as a persistent one. Industry data backs up the broader trend: Verisk CargoNet estimated that cargo-theft losses surged 60% to nearly $725 million nationally in 2025, with food and beverage thefts jumping 47% to 708 incidents, and meat and seafood products singled out as heavily targeted in the Northeast, according to CargoNet. Pennsylvania specifically saw a 24% increase in cargo-theft activity over the same period, per CargoNet's analysis.

The FBI's Philadelphia field office has also flagged a related concern, warning that cyber-enabled strategic cargo theft surged dramatically in 2025, according to the FBI Philadelphia field office.

For now, the Devereaux Street theft remains an open investigation, with Philadelphia police relying on the driver's cellphone footage and the released vehicle photos to try to identify whoever cut that padlock before dawn.
