A headless rider on a galloping horse leads the Sleepy Hollow High School football team onto the field before every home game, a pre-game spectacle that has turned a small Westchester County program into a viral sensation. The team finished its regular season 3-5, closing with a 55-33 win over Briarcliff/Hamilton, and entered the postseason with a shot at upsetting top-seeded Westlake.
A Tradition Rooted in Irving's Legend
The ritual has been a fixture at Sleepy Hollow's games since 2009, according to USA Today, which reported that videos of the horseman leading players onto the field have racked up millions of views on social media this fall. The tradition honors Washington Irving's 1820 short story, as Sports Illustrated notes, in which schoolteacher Ichabod Crane is chased by a phantom Revolutionary War Hessian soldier on horseback.
Sleepy Hollow Athletic Director Michael Arias told USA Today the tradition has gone viral over the past two years, to the point that game officials now sometimes ask ahead of time whether the horseman will be making an appearance.
The Rider and the Rescue Horse Behind the Mask
USA Today identified the rider as Leora Dillon, a horse trainer and emergency room nurse from Warwick, New York, who owns and operates Corinthian Equestrian Center in Warwick. The horse makes the trip from Warwick to Sleepy Hollow for home games.
Dillon's primary mount for the appearances is a horse named Eagle, who arrived at the center underweight and traumatized in 2017, when Dillon began rehabilitating him and teaching him to carry a rider, according to the same USA Today report. Riders who take on the role rely on a technique called bomb proofing, gradually desensitizing horses to loud noises and unusual stimuli, per Yahoo Lifestyle. Dillon told USA Today her head is tucked into the neck of the costume, concealed behind a black veil that lets her see out without being seen. Six custom costumes have been handmade for the appearances so far, the outlet reported, and Dillon estimated nearly 200 horseman appearances were booked across October alone.
The Booster Club and the Tradition
A booster club is part of the Sleepy Hollow football tradition.
The horseman also connects the team's game-day tradition with Washington Irving's legend of Sleepy Hollow.
The Regular-Season Finale
Quarterback Jeremiah Bowen is Sleepy Hollow's returning starter. The team closed its regular season on October 23.
Outside the stadium, lohud describes the Headless Horseman as a staple of local sights and festivities. Yahoo Lifestyle describes seasonal appearances at a Halloween parade and film festival and says Dillon's seasonal activity became a side hustle after people began offering to pay her to appear in costume. Sleepy Hollow's October street fair alone draws thousands of visitors each year, Yahoo Lifestyle reported, and the horseman even has company on the national costumed-mascot circuit — the character also leads Walt Disney World's Mickey's Boo to You Halloween Parade in Florida, according to Yahoo.
For Sleepy Hollow, a Westchester County town whose very name is synonymous with Irving's legend, the horseman's gallop onto the field before home games has become as much a part of the season as the scoreboard itself.
