Sunday marked the final day of business for Smoke BBQ, the Cordell Avenue barbecue joint that spent 14 years smoking brisket, pulled pork and baby back ribs in the heart of Bethesda's Woodmont Triangle. The restaurant announced its closure on social media, thanking regulars for the memories without giving a reason for shutting down.
“Sunday marks our last day after 14 years on Cordell Ave,” the restaurant wrote in its farewell post, according to The MoCo Show. “From the OG crew we can't thank you enough for all the wonderful memories! Your support over the years has meant the world to us.” The post did not explain what prompted the closure, and the restaurant's statement made no mention of a cause.
Smoke BBQ opened in early 2013 at 4858 Cordell Avenue, founded by co-owners Susan Lennon and Martin Hage. As Washingtonian reported at the time, Hage smoked meats behind a hickory-fueled smoker while hand-building the red-oak bar and tables that filled the 50-seat dining room. The menu included pulled pork, pulled chicken, brisket and smoked sausage, alongside sandwiches, wings, chili, mac and cheese, baked beans and collard greens, plus a full bar with happy hour deals.
A Local Fixture With a Few Rough Patches
The restaurant participated in the annual Taste of Bethesda festival, a street fair that typically draws tens of thousands of visitors to the Woodmont Triangle dining district, according to the site's own reporting on the festival's history. Smoke BBQ also marked its second anniversary in January 2015 with $2 food and drink specials, a milestone that stood out in a neighborhood known for rapid restaurant turnover, per the blog's coverage at the time.
Not every chapter was celebratory. In July 2022, Montgomery County Police investigated a forced-entry burglary at the restaurant after intruders shattered the front glass door of the Cordell Avenue storefront, officers responding before dawn to gather forensic evidence.
Real Estate Listing Hinted at Closure Months in Advance
Commercial real estate records show the writing was on the wall well before Sunday's announcement. The 2,130-square-foot space at 4858 Cordell Avenue was listed for immediate lease in June 2026 by Dochter & Alexander Retail Advisors, months ahead of the restaurant's public farewell message.
Other Bethesda Restaurant Closures
Woodmont Grill, a 33-year-old Bethesda dining landmark on Woodmont Avenue, shut down in October 2025 amid reduced parking access and staffing challenges, as Hoodline reported; entrepreneur Steve Salis later bought the property for $7 million to redevelop it into a Ted's Bulletin diner. Even national chains have not been spared — True Food Kitchen closed its Bethesda location this month as part of a Chapter 11 bankruptcy that eliminated 12 underperforming restaurants nationwide, following the chain's first-ever annual sales decline in 2025.
For now, Smoke BBQ's 14-year run on Cordell Avenue has ended without an explanation, leaving longtime customers with only the smell of hickory smoke and a farewell post to remember it by.
